Man free on bail faces new murder charge

NASSAU- A man on bail for murder and attempted murder is back in jail on new charges.

Ahmad Clarke, 22, of Acklins Street, was wearing an ankle bracelet when prosecutors say he killed Renaldo Nixon and attempted to murder Antonisha Adderley in a November 24 shooting at Hepburn Alley.

Three gunmen emerged from a Nissan Note around 6pm and opened fire on Nixon. Adderley, a passerby, was hit in the leg by a stray bullet.

At the time of the incident, Clarke was on bail the 2018 shooting murder of Christian Moore and the attempted murders of Romeo Moss and Tarsman Clarke.

Clarke didn’t have to enter pleas to the recent charges of murder and attempted murder at his initial court appearance and was denied bail.

Man accused of meeting young girl online for sex

NASSAU- A 50-year-old man who allegedly arranged to meet a child he met online for sex has been freed on $6,000 bail.

Steven Sands is accused of procuring the 15-year-old girl on November 19.

He was not required to enter a plea to the charge when he appeared before Senior Magistrate Derence Rolle-Davis.

Prosecutors will fast-track the case to the Supreme Court on February 19.

Man charged with double shooting caught on video

NASSAU- A 29-year-old man has been accused of the ambush shooting of two men on his street.

Prosecutors say Dominic Moss, 28, of Commonwealth Boulevard, Elizabeth Estates, took part in the shooting of Ryan Taylor and Travis Curry outside a home on the evening of November 17.

CCTV footage of the incident was widely circulated on social media.

Taylor died on the way to hospital.

Moss was not required to plead to charges of murder and attempted murder when he appeared before Magistrate Derence Rolle-Davis.

Moss has been refused bail.

Mack 10 charged with murder of two people found in car

NASSAU- Police have charged a man in the deaths of two people found dead in an abandoned car at Ida Street.

Mark “Mack 10” Augustine, 34, of Podoleo Street, is charged with two counts of murder.

The victims Doreen Mortimer and her boyfriend were found dead from gunshot wounds on the morning of November 21.

The boyfriend, who lived in the abandoned car, has not been officially identified.

Augustine, who was represented by Ian Cargill, was not required to enter a plea to the charges at his initial court appearance.

He’s been denied bail.

DEU seizes 5 kilos of cocaine at airport

Officers from the Drug Enforcement Unit are looking for the owners of 5½ kilos of cocaine.

DEU officers and Bahamas Customs Officers found the drugs secreted away in boxes that had been shipped into the country when they carried out a search warrant on a courier company at the Lynden Pindling International Airport on Tuesday.

The drugs have a wholesale street value of $80,000.

Man dead, woman hospitalized after shooting

NASSAU- Police are investigating a shooting that left a man dead and a woman injured on Tuesday.

Officers were called to the scene of a shooting at Hepburn Alley around 6pm.

Police said that three men got out of a Nissan Note and opened fire on a man. A woman walking in the area was shot in the leg.

Both gunshot victims were taken to hospital. The man died and the woman is in stable condition

Justice delayed: trial stayed after 11-year wait

NASSAU- A woman has beaten a murder charge due to an overburdened criminal justice system.

Genear McKenzie was 20 when she was arrested in 2009 for the shooting murder of Bahamasair pilot Lionel McQueen during a home-invasion. She was also accused of the attempted murder of McQueen’s cousin and roommate Montez Saunders during the September 20, 2009 home-invasion robbery.

Eleven years later, McKenzie had four judges, eight trial dates—but no trial. Witnesses were either unavailable or judges were hearing other trials.

The Court of Appeal ruled that the 11-year delay in the case breached her right to be tried in a timely manner.

The charges were permanently stayed on November 23 after prosecutors missed their final chance to start the trial.

McKenzie spent nearly three years in prison before she was released on bail.

Though McKenzie beat the charges on a technicality, the charges remain active against her codefendants Rhonda Knowles and Marvin Coleby.

Double murder probe as two found shot to death in car

NASSAU- A man and his girlfriend were found fatally shot in a car Saturday morning.

A relative called police after discovering their bodies inside the vehicle parked in front of a building on Ida Street around 6am.

It is believed they were killed the night before as residents reported hearing gunshots in the area around 10pm Friday.

The victims have not been formally identified. Police said they are investigating significant leads in the double murder.

Desperate mom to repay store for stolen groceries

NASSAU- A jobless mom-of-two was arrested after stealing $206 in groceries.

Tanai McKenzie, 41, walked out of Super Value with a “trolly full of groceries” on November 14, a court heard.

An employee reported the theft to police on November 16 after reviewing the store’s CCTV.

Police arrested McKenzie, who lost her job due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and she took them to some of the stolen groceries. However, they were no longer fit for sale.

McKenzie pleaded guilty to stealing at her arraignment before Senior Magistrate Carolyn Vogt-Evans on Friday, November 20.

Attorney Ian Cargill said that the jobless mom and cancer patient stole out of “desperation.”

Mr Cargill asked the court to have mercy on Mckenzie as it was her first brush with the law.

However, Magistrate Vogt-Evans said that McKenzie’s circumstances did not excuse her actions. The magistrate said there many places that offered food assistance.

The court ordered McKenzie to compensate Super Value for the stolen goods. Otherwise, she will spend two months in prison.

Seven months for smuggling drugs into jail

NASSAU- A corrections officer caught trying to smuggle marijuana into prison has been jailed.

Ivan Forbes had five ounces of marijuana stashed inside his jacket pocket when he reported for duty on November 16.

Police found another pound of marijuana inside two cars that belonged to Forbes. The drugs have a street value of $1,820.

Forbes, 28, pleaded guilty to three counts of drug possession with intent to supply at his arraignment on Wednesday, November 18.

However, he didn’t say how much he was paid to smuggle the drugs or where he got them.

Forbes, an officer of six years, was sentenced to seven months in prison. He has to pay a $6,000 fine to avoid spending an additional year behind bars.
