Desperate mom to repay store for stolen groceries

NASSAU- A jobless mom-of-two was arrested after stealing $206 in groceries.

Tanai McKenzie, 41, walked out of Super Value with a “trolly full of groceries” on November 14, a court heard.

An employee reported the theft to police on November 16 after reviewing the store’s CCTV.

Police arrested McKenzie, who lost her job due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and she took them to some of the stolen groceries. However, they were no longer fit for sale.

McKenzie pleaded guilty to stealing at her arraignment before Senior Magistrate Carolyn Vogt-Evans on Friday, November 20.

Attorney Ian Cargill said that the jobless mom and cancer patient stole out of “desperation.”

Mr Cargill asked the court to have mercy on Mckenzie as it was her first brush with the law.

However, Magistrate Vogt-Evans said that McKenzie’s circumstances did not excuse her actions. The magistrate said there many places that offered food assistance.

The court ordered McKenzie to compensate Super Value for the stolen goods. Otherwise, she will spend two months in prison.
