Man denies killing German expat in robbery attempt

Nassau, BAHAMAS- A man has denied murder and attempted murder charges in relation to a triple shooting on Andros that killed a German expatriate and wounded two others.

Derran Smith, 18, remains in jail without bail.

Smith, of Kemps Bay, Andros, is accused of the murder of Torsten Hendricks and the attempted murders of Hugo Hendricks and Wolfgang Hendricks during an attempted armed robbery on November 2, 2022.

The men were having drinks outside their vacation home in Johnson’s Bay when a gunman approached.

The gunman, whom prosecutors say is Smith, shot the man as they ran inside.

Smith pleaded not guilty to charges of murder, attempted murder, attempted armed robbery and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life on Friday.

He returns to court on September 13 for a trial date.

Accused shooter gets trial date after co-accused killed

Nassau, BAHAMAS- A man whose co-defendants were killed while on bail has received a trial date for his attempted murder case.

Omar Atkinson will be tried for the attempted murder of Tarrico Bowleg on February 10, 2025.

Prosecutors alleged that Atkinson, Pedreito Mejias and Dion Excelant attempted to murder Bowleg when they shot him in Pinewood Gardens on April 23, 2022.

All three men were granted bail for the offense.

However, Atkinson was remanded to prison after he was charged with the October 29, 200 murder of Fred Lifaite at Sixth Street, The Grove.

Both of Atkinson’s co-accused were killed this year.

On April 25, Mejias was killed when gunmen opened fire on a car driven by Excelant in Flamingo Gardens.

Excelant escaped unharmed. But he was killed in an ambush shooting at Summer Haven on July 6.

American man killed by rogue wave in Eleuthera

Gregory Town, ELEUTHERA- A 55-year-old American man died on Saturday after a rogue wave swept him into the ocean in Gregory Town, Eleuthera and drowned him.

According to police, the resident of Tennessee was standing on the shoreline of the Queen’s Bath around 1:30pm when the massive wave struck.

A short time later, the man was seen floating face-down on the Atlantic side of the Glass Window Bridge.

 

Accused rapist jailed for bail breaches

Freeport, Grand Bahama- A man accused of raping and beating a woman has been jailed for 24 months for breaching the terms of his bail.

Herman Major, 35, was granted $9,900 bail in March for rape and causing harm.

Prosecutors allege that on January 30 Major attacked a 23-year-old whom he was giving a ride and raped her.

The woman was found in the street at Deadman’s Reef in Freeport.

After Major was released from custody, he breached her bail terms by failing to charge his ankle monitor and failing to sign in at the Eight Mile Rock Police Station 87 times.

Mother charged for false abduction report

Nassau, BAHAMAS- Police charged a woman with making a false report after her complaint of attempted child abduction was disproven by surveillance footage.

Yolanda Smith, 32, on August 29 claimed that a strange man tried to snatch her daughter from a shopping cart while at the Super Value Food Store in Golden Gates.

As a result, police arrested 50-year-old Darren Major.

However, a review of surveillance footage revealed that Major did not grab her daughter’s hand, resulting in a struggle for the child as she had claimed.

Consequently, Major was released from police custody and Smith was arrested for wasting police resources.

Smith denied the allegation of making a false report at her arraignment before Senior Magistrate Carolyn Vogt-Evans.

Her trial is set to begin on October 25. Under he bail terms, Smith has to report to the Carmichael Road Police Station once a month and she’s forbidden from contacting prosecution witnesses.

If convicted, she faces a maximum prison term of six months’ imprisonment and a $500 fine.

Man acquitted of rape of ‘sex worker’

Nassau, BAHAMAS – A jury on Thursday wasted no time in acquitting Kevin Cooper Jr of the sexual assault of a 41-year-old “sex worker.”

After deliberating for just 15 minutes, the nine-member jury returned a not guilty verdict.

Cooper alleged that he promised to pay the woman $200 for sex after he met her at Arawak Cay on the evening of November 17, 2022.

After agreeing on the fee, he said they walked back to his place on West Bay Street, where they had consensual sex.

However, he claimed that things went south and she accused him of rape after he didn’t pay her.

Acting DPP Cordell Frazier said the portrayal of the woman as a sex worker was an attempt tarnish her character.

She urged jurors to believe the woman’s claim that she didn’t consent to sex.

According to the woman, while at Arawak Cay she paid a hacker to take her to her home in eastern New Providence.

She claimed that Cooper got into the car as well. The woman said she dozed off during the drive and woke up when the car stopped at the site of the former Cocktails and Dreams Nightclub.

She alleged that Cooper dragged her from the car and took her to his room, where he raped her for two hours.

After gaining Cooper’s trust, the woman said she told him that she wanted to go to the gas station.

She got dressed and Cooper used a bed sheet to cover his nakedness and they walked to the station together.

Once at the station, the woman asked staff to call the police.

When officers arrested Cooper for rape, he claimed that he had failed to pay the woman for sex.

Woman getaway driver charged with murder, attempted murder

Nassau, BAHAMAS- A 21-year-old woman accused of playing a role in a triple shooting that left 25-year-old Dario Dawkins dead has been charged.

Marquella Dean, the alleged getaway driver for the shooters , is charged with murder and attempted murder in connection with the August 24 incident.

According to police, three gunmen who emerged from a silver car shot Dawkins, Anton Davis and a four-year-old boy as they stood in front of a home at the junction of Rupert Dean Lane and Ferguson Street.

All of the shooting victims were taken to the hospital, where Dawkins died.

Dean didn’t have to enter pleas to the charges when she made an initial court appearance before Acting Chief Magistrate Roberto Reckley.

Bail was denied and she returns to court on November 23.

This isn’t the first time Dean has been charged with murder and attempted murder.

She was on bail for the 2018 shooting death of Sean Augustin and the attempted murder of Jason Campbell when the incident occurred.

Woman charged with attempted murder of boyfriend

Nassau, BAHAMAS- A woman accused of stabbing her boyfriend in the neck during a domestic dispute has been charged with attempted murder.

Prosecutors say Shamir Dorsett, 34, stabbed Barry Clarke, 44, during a fight at their home on Key West Street on August 25.

Dorsett didn’t have to enter a plea to the attempted murder charge when she appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Roberto Reckley.

Bail was denied and Dorsett returns to court in November.

Shooting suspect jailed for loaded gun

Nassau, BAHAMAS- A shooting suspect has been jailed for having a 9mm pistol and 36 rounds of ammunition.

Police officers found the contraband stashed in Aldeon Miller’s bedroom closet during a raid on his Gleniston Avenue home on August 27.

Just five days before, prosecutors say Miller tried to kill Latario Missick when he allegedly shot him multiple times outside of his home in Nassau Village.

Miller pleaded guilty to charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of ammunition with intent to supply at his arraignment before Acting Chief Magistrate Roberto Reckley.

He didn’t enter a plea to the enter murder charge because he will be tried in the Supreme Court.

Miller’s lawyer, Ian Cargill, told the court that the self-employed truck driver foolishly took him the gun and bullets that he found the gun while clearing bushes.

He asked the court to impose a one-year sentence and a fine.

The prosecutor, ASP Philip Davis, sought a sentence of 18 months.

The magistrate jailed Miller for 15 months on the gun charge. He also imposed a $3,000 fine with a default sentence of an additional three months in prison.

Miller received a concurrent sentence of six months’ imprisonment for the ammunition.

He is next due in court on November 14 to receive a voluntary bill of indictment for the attempted murder case.

8-year-old girl shot outside home

Nassau, BAHAMAS- Police say an eight-year-old girl is recovering in the hospital after she was shot in the leg Monday night.

The incident happened after 9pm outside her family’s home at India Drive in Flamingo Gardens.

Police said the child was sitting on the porch with family members when a gunman exited a white Japanese car and opened fire, hitting the child.

The shooter left in the same car that he arrived in.

The child was taken to the hospital, where she is in stable condition.

A search is underway for the shooter and his getaway driver.
