Man acquitted of rape of ‘sex worker’

Nassau, BAHAMAS – A jury on Thursday wasted no time in acquitting Kevin Cooper Jr of the sexual assault of a 41-year-old “sex worker.”

After deliberating for just 15 minutes, the nine-member jury returned a not guilty verdict.

Cooper alleged that he promised to pay the woman $200 for sex after he met her at Arawak Cay on the evening of November 17, 2022.

After agreeing on the fee, he said they walked back to his place on West Bay Street, where they had consensual sex.

However, he claimed that things went south and she accused him of rape after he didn’t pay her.

Acting DPP Cordell Frazier said the portrayal of the woman as a sex worker was an attempt tarnish her character.

She urged jurors to believe the woman’s claim that she didn’t consent to sex.

According to the woman, while at Arawak Cay she paid a hacker to take her to her home in eastern New Providence.

She claimed that Cooper got into the car as well. The woman said she dozed off during the drive and woke up when the car stopped at the site of the former Cocktails and Dreams Nightclub.

She alleged that Cooper dragged her from the car and took her to his room, where he raped her for two hours.

After gaining Cooper’s trust, the woman said she told him that she wanted to go to the gas station.

She got dressed and Cooper used a bed sheet to cover his nakedness and they walked to the station together.

Once at the station, the woman asked staff to call the police.

When officers arrested Cooper for rape, he claimed that he had failed to pay the woman for sex.

Miranda Adderley represented Cooper.
