NASSAU-A former dishwasher at a bar has been jailed for three years for breaking into the business and stealing items worth $25,000 last July.
Wesner Georges, of Plantol Street, worked at the Mayaguana Restaurant and Bar on East Street South for three weeks. It’s unclear whether he quit or was fired.
But on July 8, 2022, Georges and others, broke into the bar and stole tools, appliances and liquor, valued at $25,009.07. After the break-in, the bar was set afire.
Police had sought Georges for shop-breaking, stealing and arson.
However, he only faced charges of shop-breaking and stealing when he appeared before court.
His lawyer, Alphonso Lewis, asked the magistrate to consider a non-custodial sentence. He said Georges, now a sanitation worker, was willing to repay his former boss in monthly instalments of $2,000.
However, his former employer, Hiram Kelly, said he wanted the money all at once.
Kelly also urged Georges to let the police know the identities of the other thieves and what they had done with his belongings.
Georges, who was the driver, insisted that he didn’t know his accomplices. However, he said the stolen items were already sold.
Police issued a wanted bulletin for Georges last August.
They arrested him on December 29, 2022 when they executed a search warrant on a home at Plantol Street.
During the search, the officers found a 9mm magazine, two shotgun shells and five fake $US 1000 notes.
Magistrate Kendra Kelly sentenced Georges to three years’ imprisonment for the break-in and theft. The sentence will be served at the same time as the two-year sentence handed down for the firearms related offenses. Georges was fined $1,000 for the fake hundred dollar bills. However, the default sentence of six months will be served consecutively if he doesn’t pay the fine.
