New Magistrate gets top post

0

Nassau, Bahamas – A newcomer to the magistracy has been named as acting chief magistrate.

Defense lawyer Roberto Reckley was officially appointed on Tuesday, July 12 to manage magistrates with decades of experience.

The selection has caused some magistrates to question the selection process.

With just 13 years at the bar, Mr Reckley will be managing people who’ve been magistrates longer than he’s been a lawyer.

Mr Reckley is filling in while Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt is on vacation.

On her return, she will be sworn in as an acting Supreme Court judge—a vacancy created by the appointment of Senior Justice Bernard Turner as an acting appellate judge.

During a farewell party, Ferguson-Pratt asked staff to support Reckley.

She said, “I want to put your full support behind Mr Reckley; that’s a gift you could give to me. Give him your full support.

“Don’t get in the corner and backbite and undermine, saying why him? Come on, he couldn’t appoint himself. So, support him, and by so doing, you’re doing good for yourself.”

Nassau, Bahamas – A disgraced pastor and principal has been jailed for kissing a 13-year-old student in 2020.

Thomas Nottage Sr, the pastor at Grace Evangelical Ministries and the principal at its companion school, Grace Christian School of Excellence, was sentenced to seven months’ imprisonment.

Nottage, 54, has to pay a $1,000 fine and $500 in compensation to his victim, to avoid spending an additional six months in prison.

Nottage was charged with indecent assault after he called the girl into his office as she waited for her ride and kissed her against her will.

He admitted to hugging the child and telling her that he loved her. However, Nottage denied that he kissed her.

Nottage suggested that the student maliciously accused him because she had been disciplined for disruptive behavior in class.

Nottage faced a maximum sentence of three years in prison.

He didn’t receive the most severe sentence because he had no prior convictions and his crime was not considered the worst form of indecent assault.

Key witness in double murder case dies

0

A key witness to the 2013 murders and kidnapping of senior immigration officer Shane Gardiner and his girlfriend Tishka Braynen has died.

Terrel Mackey, a former co-conspirator, who was granted immunity from prosecution after he became a cooperating witness, was found dead in his car on Saturday, July 1. Foul play is not suspected.

Mackey’s testimony helped the prosecution secure convictions against Zintworn Duncombe, Daniel Coakley, James Johnson and Cordero Saunders in 2016.

However, the men’s convictions were overturned in 2020 and a new trial was ordered after the Court of Appeal found that a material irregularity occurred at their trial.

The Court ruled that the trial judge failed to thoroughly investigate an altercation between an alternate juror and the jury forewoman.

The defendants are currently on bail awaiting a retrial. Mackey’s sudden death is unlikely to affetct the upcoming trial since his testimony could still be entered into evidence.
