Residents dispute police account of fatal shooting

0

Nassau – Police shot and killed a man after they say he pulled a gun on them.

The fatal shooting happened around noon Wednesday at Second Street, Coconut Grove.

Officers went to the area after getting a tip about a group of men armed with a gun, Assistant Commissioner Solomon Cash said.

Cash said police met four men in the area. Three of them ran away and the fourth man stayed behind and pointed a gun at the officers.

In fear of their lives, the officers opened fire and killed the man.

Residents have disputed the official police report and say the deceased was unarmed.

However, Cash could not say whether the officers were wearing body cams.

In August, the government outfitted 200 frontline officers with body cams.

At the time, Commissioner of PolicePaul Rolle said, “This is going to give us, hopefully, a third eye which should also help to mitigate against some of the complaints that are levied against the police. And, also to help the police officers to be accountable. We are all about accountability and I would like to know that our officers are accountable for their actions while out on patrol.”
