24 Haitians jailed for Long Island illegal landing

LONG Island- More than half of the Haitian migrants who landed illegally on Long Island on Christmas Day were repeat offenders.

Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt today jailed 24 of the recidivists and ordered the deportation of 21 of the compatriots.

Twenty three of the repeat offenders were sentenced to six months in prison. However, a woman who’s been arrested for illegal landing three times was jailed for one year. She tried avoid detection by giving authorities a false name.

All of the migrants pleaded guilty to illegal landing when they appeared in court in Long Island today.

The Department of Immigration is organizing a repatriation flight for the 21 migrants on Bahamasair through Exuma.

Meanwhile, a magistrate will head to Andros tomorrow to arraign 52 Haitians migrants arrested in Mars Bay, Andros on Monday.
