NASSAU- A Jamaican woman faces up to 60 years in prison after a jury rejected her claim that she killed her girlfriend in self-defense.
Nadisha Beckford, 34, was on Wednesday unanimously convicted of the murder of 31-year-old Lakeisha Mackey.
Beckford, who is in the country on a spousal permit, returns to court in September for sentencing.
Beckford stabbed Mackey and slit her throat during a confrontation in the parking lot of the Mayfair Hotel on February 20, 2021.
Mackey died in hospital on February 22, 2021.
According to Beckford, Mackey threw beer bottles at her from her upstairs apartment and one of the bottles struck her leg.
After the alleged assault, she said Mackey came downstairs and ordered her to leave the area. When she didn’t, Mackey allegedly broke a beer bottle and pointed it at her.
Beckford claimed she disarmed Mackey and stabbed her in self-defense.
However, a pathologist said Mackey’s injuries did not appear to be inflicted by a broken bottle.
