Gunman killed by police faced hefty bill in acid-attack case

0

Nassau, BAHAMAS-A man killed in a police-involved shooting was trying to raise over $100,000 to avoid prison for burning a man with acid, Bahamas Court News can reveal exclusively.

But 75-year-old Cedric Thompson died in a shootout with police at the Fox Hill Police Station soon before his scheduled court appearance on March 13.

He was at the station to sign in as a bail requirement for the acid-attack case. Thompson’s deadly encounter with police occurred when he allegedly pulled a gun on a police sergeant at the front of the station. After the gunfire ended, police allegedly retrieved two pistols from the deceased.

Police had arrested and charged Thompson, then 73, with use of deadly means of harm after he doused Zhivago Smith with muriatic acid on January 13, 2019 during a row over coconuts.

The 42-year-old was picking coconuts from a tree near Thompson’s home on Francis Avenue in Fox Hill.

Thompson ordered Smith out of the tree.

But Smith ignored him because the tree wasn’t on Thompson’s property.

As Smith collected the coconuts that he had thrown to the ground, Thompson poured muriatic acid on his head, leaving him with devastating burn injuries.

Thompson ran from the scene and police arrested and charged him a week later.

Smith and a police officer had already testified in the case when Thompson, through his lawyer Ian Cargill, said he wanted to change his plea in June 2019.

Senior Magistrate Carolyn Vogt-Evans had directed Smith to compile his medical bills in order to reach a compensation order.

Smith’s medical bills exceeded $100,000.

On learning of Thompson’s death in the police-involved shooting, the magistrate said, “My heart is heavy this morning. Anytime anyone from my court dies, I am affected by it. God is great and He is gracious because he was expected to appear before me this morning with those two nines and that extra extended clip.”

Thompson is the fourth person killed in a police-involved shooting this year.

Jobless thief jailed for stealing tourist’s beach bag

Nassau, BAHAMAS-Police used technology to track down a thief who stole a tourist’s beach bag on March 5.

Cleveland McPhee, 21, of Wulff Road, swiped Sukina Apadoo’s bag as she sunbathed on the beach near the Baha Mar Resort on Cable Beach.

The bag contained an iPhone 8, sunglasses, a jump drive, and wallet, with a combined value of $1,600.

Thanks to data from the Find my iPhone app, police on patrol in the Cable Beach area nabbed the thief after he had a traffic accident, the court heard.

As a result of information from the tracking app, the officers searched McPhee’s car and recovered the stolen items.

Apadoo identified her belongings at the Cable Beach Police Station, the court heard.

Police charged McPhee with stealing and the alternative charge of receiving. He admitted the offence of stealing at his arraignment before Senior Magistrate Carolyn Vogt-Evans.

Consequently, prosecutors withdrew the receiving charge.

McPhee did not have a lawyer and said nothing on his behalf before the court passed sentence.

The magistrate asked, “Is there anything you would like to say before I pass sentence?’

McPhee replied, “No ma’am.”

“Do you work?”, Vogt-Evans asked.

Once again, McPhee replied, “No ma’am.”

The magistrate said she considered McPhee’s early guilty plea, youth and previously clean record in arriving at the six month sentence.

Inquest jury returns finding of homicide in death of unarmed man

A coroner’s inquest jury has returned a finding of homicide in the shooting death of an unarmed man.

Store owner Johnny Lam shot and killed Hugh Thompson, 50, of Market Street, after he allegedly tried to steal a hose from Por Por’s Food Store on January 25, 2017.

Lam shot Thompson, whose street name was “Sixty”, three times in the buttocks and legs with a licensed shotgun.

Lam said he closed up his shop, located on Market Street, around 7pm and retired to his home on the property.

About an hour later, he heard a noise outside which he investigated. Lam said when he looked at his surveillance cameras he saw a man trying to take something from a container.

That’s when Lam got his shotgun and ordered Thompson to stop. When Thompson didn’t obey his command, Lam shot him and then called police.

Thompson, who had an arrest history for minor offences, died at the scene. Police found the hose that Thompson supposedly tried to steal at his feet.

Police arrested Lam on suspicion of murder but no charges were filed. Instead, police sent the case to the Coroner’s Court for further investigation.

The five-member inquest jury returned its unanimous verdict on March 2 after listening to two days of testimony. A coroner’s jury does not determine criminal or civil liability.

Coroner Jeanine Weech-Gomez asked the jury to determine the identity of the deceased; the place and time of death; the cause of death and manner of death.

The jury found that the deceased was Hugh Thompson, who died at Por Por’s Food Store on January 25, 2017 from a shotgun wound to the right lower extremity. The jury found the manner of death a homicide.

The coroner’s case file will now be forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions, who will determine if any charges will be filed.

Government House intruder arrested sleeping on lawn

0

Nassau, BAHAMAS- Police arrested a man in the garden of Government House after he entered the grounds undetected in a major security breach.

The Defence Force marines responsible for security at Government House didn’t notice when Clinton Saunders walked through the front gate.

However, marines later found Saunders asleep on the lawn while on patrol around 9:30pm on March 3.

Government House is the official residence of Bahamas Governor General C.A. Smith.

Governor General Smith was not on the property at the time.

Saunders, 39, pleaded guilty to vagrancy at his arraignment before Magistrate Samuel McKinney.

He sentenced Saunders to one month in prison and ordered him to get mental treatment.

Saunders, who is homeless, told police that he wanted somewhere safe to sleep. Saunders claimed he walked through the gate after a marine left his post.

This is not the first security breach at Government House.

National Security Minister Marvin Dames ordered a review of security at Government House after the murder of Petty Officer Percival Perpall.

He was gunned down while on duty at Government House on April 28, 2019.

The committee responsible for evaluating security procedures at Government House completed its report last month. The committee’s findings, however, have not yet been made public.
