Cop charged in stabbing of two men at Polo Club

NASSAU-A recently enlisted police officer allegedly took the law into his own hands by stabbing two men.

Prosecutors say Constable Vernon Varence, 23, stabbed Nolin Flowers and Kashif Satchell multiple times at the Polo Club on Andros Avenue.

The incident happened on September 5.

Police learned of the incident when Flowers and Satchell showed up at the emergency room.

Flowers is in critical condition, while Satchell is in stable condition.

Officer Varence pleaded not guilty to causing grievous harm to Flowers and causing harm to Satchell at an arraignment before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt.

Varence’s lawyer Keith Bell applied for emergency bail in the Supreme Court.

Varence returns to court in December.

Court orders counselling for man who punched 12-year-old daughter

NASSAU-A man who punched his 12-year-old daughter in the face and threatened to kill her for “being sassy” could spend three months in prison if he doesn’t attend counselling.

Police arrested the 35-year-old man following the incident at his home on September 5.

He pleaded guilty to threats of death and cruelty to children when he before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes on Tuesday, September 8.

Prosecutors Sergeant Kenny Thompson told the court that the man came home drunk and asked his daughter if she wanted something to eat.

He got upset when she refused the food that he’d brought back. The father punched the girl and threatened to kill her as she spoke to her aunt on the phone, the court heard.

The maintenance worker told the court that he didn’t intend to hurt his daughter, neither did he want to kill her.

He said, “The incident just blew out of proportion. I wasn’t trying to kill my daughter. I’ve been taking care of her for the past 12 years.”

The father claimed that the child lived with him because her mother couldn’t handle her “sassiness”.

The man has one year to successfully conclude anger management, parenting and alcohol abuse programs.

The incident won’t show up on his record if he does.

Construction worker dies after fall from roof

A construction worker fell to his death while working on the Sir Jack Hayward High School in Grand Bahama.

The man was making repairs to the roof when he slipped and crashed to the ground around 3pm today.

The injured man died from his injuries a short time later at the Rand Memorial Hospital.

Woman charged with arson over house fire

NASSAU- A cook accused of setting a fire that destroyed one home and damaged three others has been denied bail.

Angelique Williams is accused of torching Bonnie Solomon’s wooden home at Laird Street on September 2, causing $123,418 in damage.

The flames from that fire damaged three wooden homes in the vicinity.

Prosecutors say Williams caused $30,000 in damage to Julian Newbold’s home.

She allegedly caused $8,000 in damage to Marcus Newbold’s home and $15,000 in damage to Janet Serrette’s home.

Williams, a cook at Prime Time Restaurant and Lounge, was not required to enter pleas to the charges when she appeared before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes.

She’s been denied bail and returns to court on November 11.

Williams, of Laird Street, will remain in custody if she doesn’t get bail from a Supreme Court judge.

Drug addict gets conditional discharge

NASSAU- A man who bought crack cocaine to feed his 20-year drug addiction has been granted a conditional discharge.

Police arrested Aristople Smith, 34, around 2am on Parkgate Road.

Smith, of Tuckaway Road, gave the officers three packets of crack cocaine. They found another three when they searched his Nissan Cube.

Smith, a married father of one, told the court he started using drugs at 14.

He said, “This kind of addiction ain’t easy.”

Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes said that drug addiction is considered more of a disease than a crime.

As a result, he gave Smith an opportunity to beat his habit.

Smith will avoid a conviction if he successfully completes drug counseling for one year.

If he doesn’t, he’ll go to prison for three months.

Two deny smuggling $80,000 ganja from Canada

NASSAU-A man and woman on Monday denied plotting to smuggling $80,000 worth of potent purple haze marijuana into The Bahamas.

Urica Seymour, 32, of Sea Breeze, and Craig Gibson, 36, of Kent Drive, were arrested on September 4 after a customs officer found 20 pounds of the drug inside packages that had been shipped from Canada.

Seymour allegedly went to collect the illicit cargo and police arrested her alleged accomplice a short time later.

The pair denied charges of drug possession with intent to supply, conspiracy to possess drugs with intent to supply, drug importation and conspiracy to import drugs at their arraignment.

Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes scheduled a November 24.

He remanded the suspects to prison.

However, a short time later Justice Gregory Hilton freed them on $9,000 bail each at an emergency bail hearing.

Jomo Campbell represents Seymour and Bjorn Ferguson represents Gibson.

Shoplifter gets probation

NASSAU-A jobless woman tried to steal children’s clothing worth $507 from Kelly’s last month.

Store security stopped Travinique Belfour before she walked out the store with the merchandise in her bag on August 27.

Belfour offered to pay for the stolen goods. But it’s company policy to call in cops.

Belfour,, of Fox Dale, pleaded guilty to stealing from a shop at her arraignment today.

Senior Magistrate Derence Rolle-Davis sentenced Belfour to probation for one year. If she gets into trouble during the probationary period, she’ll have to pay a $500 fine to avoid spending nine months in prison.

Man accused of recording rape of teen

NASSAU- Prosecutors allegedly have video of a man raping a teenage girl.

Mark Nathaniel Strachan, 18, of Honey Cooper Lane, is accused of the statutory rape of the 14-year-old girl that allegedly took place from January 1 through April 30.

Strachan faced charges of  unlawful sexual intercourse and child pornography at his initial court appearance before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes on Monday, September 7.

Strachan has been denied bail and returns to court on November 2.

Immigration workers deny corruption claims

NASSAU-Two employees at the Department of Immigration are accused of defrauding a man who had applied for permanent residency.

Dexter Frazier, 46, of Constitution Drive, and Khaliah Brown, 39, of Seabreeze Boulevard, are accused of taking $2,600 from Raymond Bubel to approve his application.

Prosecutors claim that Brown forged a naturalization letter and an approval letter, which Frazier then gave to Mr Bubel, a Canadian citizen.

Frazier and Brown face charges of conspiracy to commit fraud by false pretense and fraud by false pretenses in respect of the money allegedly received from Mr Bubel.

Brown is charged with two counts of forgery regarding the letters she allegedly prepared.

And, Frazier is charged with possession of those forged documents and giving them to Mr Bubel.

They denied all charges at their arraignment before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt, who adjourned the matter to November 5.

Shortly after the arraignment, Justice Cheryl Grant-Thompson set their bail at $9,900 bail each during an emergency hearing.

Hope Strachan, Devard Francis and Roberto Reckley represent the accused.

 

Police officer suspended over brutality claim

NASSAU-An officer seen manhandling a drug suspect in surveillance footage has been suspended.

Police made the announcement after a video of the arrest outside the New Village Pub on Balfour Avenue on Saturday, August 29 went viral on social media.

In the video, the officer throws the suspect to the ground and puts his foot on his back.

The 35-year-old man appeared before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt on Monday charged with drug possession with intent to supply.

Prosecutors allege that police found him with two pounds of marijuana.

The man, whose name has been withheld for his protection, denied the charge at his arraignment. His lawyer Alex Dorsett said that his client was still swollen from injuries sustained at arrest. According to Mr Dorsett, his client’s teeth were shaky as a result.

Mr Dorsett said that surveillance footage had captured the incident.

According to a statement from police, the officer involved will remain on leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The results of the investigation will be made public, the statement said.
