Punch killed in latest attempt

FREEPORT – A who survived an attempt on his life in 2019, was killed in a shooting tonight.

Omar “Punch” Penn, 41, was gunned down in front of Island Luck in the East Sunrise area in Freeport, Grand Bahama.

According to police, a lone gunman approached and shot Penn in the head.

He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Police are questioning a 21-year-old man of Elizabeth Estates in New Providence in connection to Penn’s murder.

In April 2019, a man opened fire on Penn while he was at the Out Da Sea.

Penn was injured but recovered.

He also escaped death in 2018 when two gunmen opened fire on Penn as he sat in his car at the International Bazaar.

Once again, Penn escaped with his life.

Man beat girl, 9, with pipe

NASSAU – A man who beat his niece with a pipe has been fined.

Kalsey Cox Jr, 24, of Cottonwood Street, pleaded guilty to child cruelty at his arraignment on Friday.

Cox grabbed the pipe and whaled the nine-year-old girl across her buttocks after she wouldn’t stop swinging from a railing, the court heard.

The child was taken to hospital with visible injuries.

Cox had to pay a $1,000 in order to avoid spending six months in prison.

Two accused of murder of former inmate

NASSAU- A suspect in a fatal shooting was arrested with a loaded gun, prosecutors say.

Nelson Bevans, 28, of Duncanson Road, is charged with murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Prosecutors say Bevans, otherwise known as “Shine”, and Jamal “Daddy” Brown, 35, are responsible for the murder of Mario Duncan on February 8.

Duncan, 25, who was recently released from prison, was found shot to death through a track road, off Golden Isles Road.

Police allegedly found Bevans with a 9mm pistol and 10 rounds of ammunition on February 14.

Both Bevans and Brown were were denied bail when they appeared before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes. They are expected to return to court on May 18

Man charged with attempted rape of woman, 74

FREEPORT- A man has been accused of attempting to rape a 74-year-old woman in Eight Mile Rock, Grand Bahama.

Police say that Eric O’Neil Strachan is responsible for the crime that allegedly occurred on February 15.

Strachan, 36, of Andros Town, Hanna Hill, did not have a lawyer when he  appeared before Deputy Chief Magistrate Debbye Ferguson on a charge of attempted rape.

Strachan was denied bail and remanded to the Bahamas Department of Corrections in New Providence.

Strachan returns to court on May 19 to receive a voluntary bill of indictment that will send his matter to the Supreme Court.

Former wanted man acquitted of murder

NASSAU- A Supreme Court jury has found Jamal Wallace not guilty of murder.

Prosecutors said Remo Fox was able to identify Wallace as his killer before he died on August 5, 2013.

Fox allegedly made a dying declaration to his wife and a policeman before doctors rushed him into surgery.

A witness to the shooting said the gunman had braids in his hair.

Wallace remained on the country’s Most Wanted List for almost four years before he was arrested in Tampa, Florida in May 2017.

Wallace was charged with Fox’s murder following his deportation to The Bahamas in July 2017.

At trial, Wallace’s lawyer Lennox Coleby questioned the likelihood that Fox named his killer before he died, as bullets had damaged his lung and diaphragm.

Coleby also called several men who did security work with Wallace at a hotel as witnesses.

They testified that in 2013 Wallace did not have cornrows because it was a banned hairstyle at their workplace.

The jury returned a majority acquittal of 8-1.

Jacklyn Burrows prosecuted the case, which was presided over by Justice Cheryl Grant-Thompson.

All clear given after bomb threat at Magistrates’ Court

NASSAU- Nothing suspicious was found after police investigated a bomb threat at the South Street Magistrates’ Court Complex Thursday morning.

The building was evacuated while the SWAT team investigated the threat.

Bomb sniffer dogs swept the building and found no explosives.

Police gave the all-clear around 11:40am and employees were allowed to re-enter the building. The nearby Nassau Street Police Station received the call shortly before 10am, prompting an evacuation of the building.

Court was scheduled to begin at 10:30am.

Bahamian busted at FLL Airport for cocaine smuggling

FLORIDA- A Bahamian man is facing drug trafficking charges after US Customs and Border Patrol Officers caught him trying to collect four kilos of cocaine.

Darron Smith, 28, is scheduled to be arraigned on charges of conspiracy to import and possess cocaine on March 3.

CBP officers assigned to the Fort Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport found the cocaine in a duffle bag that arrived on a Jet Blue flight from Nassau, Bahamas on February 15.

They removed the packages and placed the bag on the carousel to determine its owner.

A short time later, Smith collected the bag from luggage claim.

The officers tackled him to the ground when he tried to flee.

During questioning, Smith said that he was in the United States on a visitor’s visa and living with his uncle in Miami Gardens.

Smith said his aunt had dropped him to the airport in a rental car.

The officers found a FLL parking ticket, $1840 US dollars, an iPhone, watch and chain during a pat down search.

Stockpile of stolen goods found in Abaco home

ABACO- Authorities in Abaco have uncovered a stash of tools, building supplies and generators in a home in Dundas Town.

Police and Defence Force Officers raided the home on Tuesday as part of a theft investigation.

During the search the officers found the suspected stolen property.

Four men were arrested.

Fake lawyer jailed for smuggling drugs into prison

NASSAU- A woman who posed as a lawyer in order to smuggle drugs into the prison couldn’t afford to pay one for herself when she appeared in court today.

Warnika Russell, 25, of Zion Boulevard, was arrested at the prison for presenting a fake Bar Association ID in the name of Ashley Evans on February 12.

When police searched her at the Elizabeth Estates Police Station, they found 2.6 pounds of marijuana taped to her abdomen.

Police found more drugs, weighing 1.6 pounds, when they searched her home.

Russell had impersonated Evans, who is a real lawyer, when visiting the prison 11 times since September 12, 2020.

Guards called police when they realized her ID wasn’t legitimate on Friday.

Russell cooperated with investigators and told them that an inmate called Stephen Greene orchestrated the plan. He allegedly provided the ID, which gave her unfettered access to the prison, and allowed her bring in drugs and cellphones.

Greene, who is her boyfriend, is serving 15 years for armed robbery. Russell was arrested with Greene as a juvenile.

Russell said she had been promised $3,000 to deliver the 2.6 pounds of marijuana to the prison. The jobless nail technician said she needed the money to care for her son.

Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes sentenced Russell to 15 months.

Conch vendor charged with hawking

NASSAU- Police arrested and charged a man for selling conch without a vendor’s permit.

The officers seized 54 conchs from McKenzie Jerome on January 27.

The 52-year-old had allegedly set up shop without getting a vendor’s permit.

He denied the hawking charge at his arraignment and was given $100 self-signed bail.

Jerome he returns to court for trial on April 20.
