Fake lawyer jailed for smuggling drugs into prison

NASSAU- A woman who posed as a lawyer in order to smuggle drugs into the prison couldn’t afford to pay one for herself when she appeared in court today.

Warnika Russell, 25, of Zion Boulevard, was arrested at the prison for presenting a fake Bar Association ID in the name of Ashley Evans on February 12.

When police searched her at the Elizabeth Estates Police Station, they found 2.6 pounds of marijuana taped to her abdomen.

Police found more drugs, weighing 1.6 pounds, when they searched her home.

Russell had impersonated Evans, who is a real lawyer, when visiting the prison 11 times since September 12, 2020.

Guards called police when they realized her ID wasn’t legitimate on Friday.

Russell cooperated with investigators and told them that an inmate called Stephen Greene orchestrated the plan. He allegedly provided the ID, which gave her unfettered access to the prison, and allowed her bring in drugs and cellphones.

Greene, who is her boyfriend, is serving 15 years for armed robbery. Russell was arrested with Greene as a juvenile.

Russell said she had been promised $3,000 to deliver the 2.6 pounds of marijuana to the prison. The jobless nail technician said she needed the money to care for her son.

Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes sentenced Russell to 15 months.
