Mother charged for false abduction report

Nassau, BAHAMAS- Police charged a woman with making a false report after her complaint of attempted child abduction was disproven by surveillance footage.

Yolanda Smith, 32, on August 29 claimed that a strange man tried to snatch her daughter from a shopping cart while at the Super Value Food Store in Golden Gates.

As a result, police arrested 50-year-old Darren Major.

However, a review of surveillance footage revealed that Major did not grab her daughter’s hand, resulting in a struggle for the child as she had claimed.

Consequently, Major was released from police custody and Smith was arrested for wasting police resources.

Smith denied the allegation of making a false report at her arraignment before Senior Magistrate Carolyn Vogt-Evans.

Her trial is set to begin on October 25. Under he bail terms, Smith has to report to the Carmichael Road Police Station once a month and she’s forbidden from contacting prosecution witnesses.

If convicted, she faces a maximum prison term of six months’ imprisonment and a $500 fine.
