Ex-con convicted of murder

Nassau, BAHAMAS- An ex-con has been convicted of killing a man soon after he was freed from prison.

A jury on Friday unanimously convicted 54-year-old Franklyn Edgecombe of the murder of Rico Archer.

The charges stem from a December 11, 2018 shooting at North Street.

It was the prosecution’s case that Edgecombe, otherwise called Chilly, shot Archer in the back and buttocks. Once he fell to the ground, Edgecombe allegedly stood over him and shot him in the head.

Edgecombe denied shooting Archer in his testimony. He claimed that he was at work when the incident occurred. However, his boss did not confirm his alibi.

A sentencing hearing is set for October 18.

Edgecombe was charged with the murder within weeks of the Court of Appeal quashing his conviction for attempted murder.

He had been sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment for shooting Kirkwood Rolle at Anderson Street.

On September 17, 2018, the appellate court overturned Edgecombe’s conviction and sentence, paving the way for his release.
