NASSAU – A man accused of raping a senior citizen during a burglary will no longer be tried.
Thorne Cooper, 28, has been released from prison after prosecutors dropped the case against him.
Prosecutors had accused Cooper of raping the the 65-year-old woman during on a home invasion on July 24, 2020.
However, the alleged rape victim died before the trial.
Consequently, Acting DPP Franklyn Williams QC issued a nolle prosequi in the case.
Cooper spent two years in custody awaiting trial on the case.
In 2015, Cooper was convicted of assault with intent to rape and armed robbery. Justice Ian Winder sentenced him to 10 years in prison with credit for the two years that he had spent on remand.
He didn’t serve the full 10 years with time off for good behavior.
