Accused sex trafficker gives birth in custody

NASSAU – A pregnant inmate has given birth in hospital.

Accused human trafficker Shamika Rolle was five months pregnant when police arrested her in March on accusations that she forced two runaway teens into prostitution.

The crimes allegedly occurred from February 1 to March 4, 2021.

Prison officials took Rolle to the Princess Margaret Hospital several days before she gave birth.

Rolle and her co-defendant Jamalaya Roberts are accused of forcing the children to sell their bodies and keeping the money for themselves.

They have denied the charges and were each granted $30,000 bail.

Roberts, a loan officer, is on bail.

Rolle, however, remained in custody because her sureties were not qualified to post her bail.

Bail over $10,000 requires property papers.
