NASSAU- An accused double murderer was released on bail last month, less than a year after his alleged 10-year-old victim was killed by bullets meant for someone else.

Lorencia Walkes became a victim of a suspected gang shooting when three armed men opened fire on a group of men next door.

Perron Bain, believed to be the intended target, of the May 29, 2020 shooting at Bellview Circle in Bel Air Estates died at the scene. Little Lorencia and Leroy Sands, another victim of the shooting, were rushed to hospital. The fifth-grade student at Sybil Strachan Primary died in hospital eight days later.

Police arrested Delanzo Cartwright Jr., 22, of Pinewood Gardens, and Donald Cox, 24, of Bamboo Boulevard in June and charged them with the murders and attempted murder. They were denied bail.

Cartwright, who has lost his father and two brothers to gang violence, was granted pretrial release on $30,000 bail with two sureties on February 5 on strict conditions. In addition to wearing an ankle bracelet, Cartwright has to report to the East Street South Police Station on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays before 6pm. Cartwright has to surrender to police before his trial begins.

Cartwright’s co-accused Cox, who has a prior conviction for illegal gun possession, will soon join him as he was also granted bail on the same conditions this week.
