NASSAU-A Golden Gates resident suspected of robbing two businesses in a week says he’s innocent.
Devon Carey, one of two men sought in the incidents, made his first court appearance on Friday. He did not have a lawyer.
Prosecutors say Carey, 24, tried to kill Samuel Strachan, owner of J & S Convenience on Joe Farrington Road, after he was robbed of $300 on June 9. A gunman shot Strachan in the shoulder during the hold-up.
Also, prosecutors say Carey, with others, robbed Ghisele Lubin of $761.59, the property of Mac Grab Convenience Store, located in Jubilee Gardens, on June 3.
Carey did not have to enter pleas to the charges when he appeared before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes on Friday.
However, Carey told the court that police had charged the wrong man.
He said investigators showed him surveillance footage of both incidents and he was not in either video.
Magistrate Forbes told Carey that he’d have a chance to tell his side in the Supreme Court.
Prosecutors plan to send the cases to the Supreme Court by a voluntary bill of indictment on September 30.
Magistrate Forbes remanded Carey to prison. However, he can apply for bail in the Supreme Court.
Carey faced an unrelated charge of threats of death. He pleaded not guilty to claims that he threatened to kill Brittany Williams on June 8.
Magistrate Forbes will begin Carey’s death threat trial on September 30.
