Children get sick after eating ganja cookies

ELEUTHERA- Authorities are investigating after several children in Rock Sound, Eleuthera got sick after eating marijuana-laced cookies.

According to police, the cookies were shipped from New Providence to Rock Sound by mailboat.

Just last month, police arrested a 15-year-old student of S C McPherson High School for selling Rice Krispies Treats containing marijuana to other students.

Seven students were hospitalized after eating the marijuana sweets.

The teenager is on $500 bail. He will be arraigned next week.

Businessman denies touching woman’s breasts

NASSAU- A businessman has been accused of indecent assault.

Prosecutors say Kevin Surujlal, owner of the Shipwreck, touched a 27-year-old woman’s breasts without her permission.

Surujlal, of Paradise Island, denied the charge at his arraignment today.

He was granted $7,000 bail. He will return to court in June for his trial.

Surujlal, of Paradise Island, is a member of the national development secretariat.

NASSAU-Police arrested a wide receiver for the San Francisco 49ers at the Lynden Pindling International Airport after authorities found drugs in his backpack.

Mohamed Aasin Sanu, 31, was headed to Atlanta on April 2 when Customs and Border Patrol officers selected him for a random search.

The officers found an ounce of marijuana, three marijuana spliffs and edibles in Sanu’s backpack during the search.

However, Sanu didn’t spend the weekend in custody. Officers from the Drug Enforcement Unit gave him bail to appear in court on April 6.

He pleaded guilty to the charge of possession of dangerous drugs at an arraignment before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes and was granted an absolute discharge.

Businessman accused of raping teen at hotel

NASSAU- A 58-year-old Bahamian businessman has been charged with the rape of an American teen at a local hotel.

Henry Richard Nixon, of Westridge, is accused of raping the 15-year-old at the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar property on April 4.

Nixon, a welder and owner of Cover Up Bahamas, was not required to enter a plea to the charge when he made his initial court appearance today.

He was denied bail and returns to court in May.

Straw Market arsonist fined for vagrancy

NASSAU- The man convicted of setting the fire that destroyed the Straw Market in 2001 has been fined for vagrancy.

Cordney Brian Gardiner, 47, was arrested on April 2 after he was found at Polhemus Pharmacy without lawful excuse.

Gardiner pleaded guilty and was fined $300 or two months in prison.

Back in 2003, Gardiner was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment after he was convicted of four counts of arson.

On September 4, 2001 Gardiner deliberately set the fire that destroyed the Straw Market; the Ministry of Tourism’s headquarters; Beaumont House, home to several offshore banks, shops and lawyers’ offices, and Colony Place, which housed shops and a restaurant.

Pastor granted $1,000 bail

NASSAU- Controversial pastor Julian Johnson has been granted $1,000 bail in his intentional libel case.

Johnson, the pastor of Grace International Ministries, spent the night at prison pending a bail hearing.

Johnson, 50, was re-arraigned when he appeared before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes this morning.

Prosecutors allege that Johnson with intent to defame accused Police Commissioner Paul Rolle of sexually assaulting female police officers.

He has denied the charge and could face a maximum of two years’ imprisonment, if convicted.

The prosecutor, who had asked for bail to be deferred yesterday, said she was satisfied that Johnson was a suitable candidate for bail.

Johnson returns to court on July 28 for trial.

Man withdraws guilty plea in Abaco hit-and-run

ABACO- A 22-year-old man withdrew his guilty plea yesterday in connection with last month’s hit-and-run in Abaco.

Cordell Culmer on March 30 had pleaded guilty to assault with a dangerous instrument after a video of him allegedly running into Ricardo McIntosh with his car on March 28 went viral.

At the time of his arraignment, Magistrate Ancella Evans released Culmer on $2,000 self-signed bail, pending sentencing.

In a surprising twist, Culmer withdrew his plea on the scheduled sentencing date.

Magistrate Evans set an August 11 trial date and freed Culmber on $2,000 bail with one surety.

As a condition of bail, Culmer has to report to the Cooper’s Town Police Station on Mondays before 6pm and not interfere with McIntosh.

Cops hunt third man as 2 charged in $3.1m coke bust

NASSAU- A pilot and an ex-con have been charged in connection with a $3.1 million cocaine seizure as police search for a third suspect.

Pilot Brandon Miller, 29, of South Beach, and Johnnie Emil, 46, of Rock Sound, Eleuthera, appeared before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes over their alleged involvement in the March 29 drug seizure.

Officers from the Drug Enforcement Unit went to the Governor’s Harbour Airport after learning of the alleged drug run.

DEU officers stopped and searched two men who disembarked the target airplane and searched them.

But they didn’t find anything illegal. However, DEU officers later found several cocaine-filled bags in bushes near the airstrip.

Prosecutors allege that Miller conspired with Emil to import the cocaine and to distribute it.

Miller is also charged with cocaine possession with intent to supply and importation.

Both men entered not guilty pleas at their arraignment on Tuesday.

Magistrate Forbes set bail at $10,000 for Miller.

On the other hand, Emil, who has prior convictions for drug trafficking, returns to court on April 12 for a bail hearing.

Jomo Campbell represents Miller and Tamara Taylor-Storr appeared for Emil.

NASSAU- A man being sought by police joined in the banter as Facebook users poked fun of a mug shot that didn’t exactly show his best side.

Soon after the wanted bulletin for attempted murder suspect Shaquille Burrows was posted on Sunday, he shared the notice to his own Facebook page and complained about the photo.

Then Burrows, 25, engaged in lighthearted exchanges with other users on Bahamas Court News Page.

Some readers were taken aback by his “boldness.”

We’re not sure if Burrows is always so talkative, but it would be in his best interests to remain silent whenever he’s questioned by police.

Man shot to death at dominoes game

NASSAU- A man shot during a game of dominoes has died in hospital.

Police said the victim was playing dominoes on Nassau Street around midday on Sunday, April 4 when a man he knows shot him in the abdomen.

The man was taken to hospital, where he died.
