Contract killer appeals conviction

NASSAU – A man sentenced to 65 years in prison for a contract killing is appealing his conviction.

A jury found that Jahmaro Edgecombe took a $6,000 hit on 19-year-old Kenyari Lightbourne.

Prosecutors alleged that Daran Neely, the alleged leader of the Dirty South Order gang, ordered the hit on Lightbourne because of his ties to the Mad Ass gang.

After Edgecombe killed Lightbourne in an ambush through Woods Alley on June 21, 2016, prosecutors said that Sean “Fire” Brown paid him the blood money for Neely.

Edgecombe confessed to the crime during a video-recorded interview three weeks after the murder.

According to Edgecombe, Neely had offered him money to bump off Lightbourne and other associates of the Mad Ass gang, namely “Spider”, “Eyes” and “Kadi”.

Edgecombe said he walked up to Lightbourne and shot him three times with a chrome 40-caliber handgun.

Then, he ran onto Baillou Hill Road and caught a bus into the Pinewood area to collect his money.

Edgecombe said he paid some bills and gave the rest of the money to relatives.

He alleged that he sold the gun to a man known as “Mob”. At trial, Edgecombe claimed that police beat him to make the statement.

Neely and Brown were also tried for the alleged role in the murder, but they were acquitted.

Pastor told student he loved her before tongue kiss, court hears

0

NASSAU- A married pastor allegedly told a student that he loved her before he tongue kissed her, a court heard.

A former student at Grace Christian School of Excellence made the explosive allegation against Pastor Thomas Nottage when she took the witness stand.

For his part, Nottage, who is also the school’s principal, has maintained his innocence at his indecent assault trial before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt.

The witness, who was 13 when the incident allegedly took place, is now 15.

The girl said she was waiting for her ride around 3:30pm on January 29, 2020, when Nottage called her into his office. No one else was inside since his wife, who is the school’s vice principal, had gone out, she said.

Once in the officer, the student said that Nottage told her that he loved her. At that time, she didn’t think anything of it, because she told him she loved him too.

The teenager testified, “I told him I loved him as a father. I mean, like someone I looked up to, like a role model. He took care of me. If I didn’t have money, he gave me food. He had hugged me before in his office, and on those occasions, it was just me and him. The hug he gave me on that day was inappropriate – like what a boyfriend would give to a girlfriend. He then kissed me on my lips three times. Then, on the fourth kiss, he put his tongue in my mouth.”

Rape fear

The shocked teen recalled backing away from Nottage. Suddenly, he asked her to put empty five-gallon water bottles inside his wife’s car.

She testified, “When I looked, I realized that his wife had just pulled up outside.”

The girl said she believed that Nottage would have raped her if his wife hadn’t returned.

Distraught, the teen dutifully put the jugs into the car’s trunk before she returned to where her friend was waiting on her ride.

The witness’ friend has testified that her friend was shaking and looked like she wanted to cry when she came out of the office.

The friend said the girl eventually confided that Nottage had kissed her—and she advised her not to remain silent about the incident.

The girl said her her uncle and mother reported the matter to police after they confronted Nottage about allegations.

During cross-examination by Nottage’s lawyer, Keith Seymour, the witness that she was lying to get back at Nottage for beating her for being disrespectful.

The trial continues. Attorney Samantha Miah is prosecuting.

Probe underway into how man and woman got into the same cell

NASSAU- An investigation is underway into how a man and woman ended up in the same cell in violation of police procedure, Minister of National Security Wayne Munroe confirmed.

The failure to comply with those protocols resulted in the 25-year-old being sexually assaulted by Ryan Ramond Bodie, 32, at the East Street South Police Station on October 21.

While confirming the investigation, Munroe did not say whether the officers involved had been placed on leave. Bahamas Court News understands that an experienced sergeant was in charge of the shift when the incident occurred.

Police officers took the station after they pulled her over in Nassau Village and discovered that she had an outstanding warrant for a traffic case.

Meanwhile, Bodie was arrested for allegedly threatening to kill his father and breaking the glass to his father’s trunk.

Bodie pleaded guilty to indecent when he appeared before Magistrate Kendra Kelly.

She was asleep in the cell when police put Bodie inside there with her. He immediately began masturbating before he fell asleep.

When Bodie woke up, he sat next to the woman and pleasured himself while touching her hand. The man threatened to rape the woman and give her AIDS.

The woman ran to the cell door and called out for help, but no officers came. The man took off his soiled boxers and threatened to stuff them down the woman’s throat. She continued screaming until officers intervened and removed her from the cell.

Munroe told reporters, “A female was in a cell, from what we gathered, and was sleeping with a blanket. One would think that there is a detention record for her in her name. Whether she has a name that appears to be a man’s name, it should have been clear that there’s a female in custody.

“How do you get to put a male in a cell with a female? I would like to hear that explanation.”

Munroe said the inquiry would also reveal whether the officers checked on both detainees at regular intervals as required.

Accused killer denies jealousy over other women

0

NASSAU- Accused killer Lynette Charlton hit back at suggestions by a police detective that jealousy drove her to murder when she described the deceased as her “f*** buddy.”

Jurors heard the shocking disclosure when prosecutors played a video of a police officer quizzing her about the December 27, 2015 shooting of Wayne Seymour at Adelaide.

Investigating officer Sergeant 2733 Lincoln McKenzie asked Charlton, “Do you know Wayne Seymour?”

After Charlton said that she did, the officer asked, “What was he to you?”

Without batting an eye, Charlton replied, “F*** buddy.”

McKenzie said, “I put it to you that you were in a relationship with Wayne Seymour and it became confrontational because you were obsessively jealous over him having other girlfriends. What do you have to say to that?”

But Charlton was adamant that despite their intimacy, they were “never in a relationship.”

McKenzie suggested that Seymour had picked her up from her Redland Acres apartment between 7pm. and 8pm. According to his theory, Charlton shot Seymour multiple times about the body before she drove off in his truck, leaving him to die “like a dog in the road”.

Charlton replied, “No sir, with an explanation, because I cannot drive at night; I cannot see.”

In the interview Charlton explained why Seymour’s keys were in her bag when she surrendered to police.

According to Charlton, Seymour had misplaced his keys, passport and wallet when they rented a room at an inn off East Bay Street sometime in December. Unable to get into his truck, Charlton said, they walked to her apartment in Redland Acres to get her car.

Charlton claimed that she later found Seymour’s passport in her bag, but she didn’t locate the keys.
