NASSAU- A Jamaican woman faces up to 60 years in prison after a jury rejected her claim that she killed her girlfriend in self-defense.

Nadisha Beckford, 34, was on Wednesday unanimously convicted of the murder of 31-year-old Lakeisha Mackey.

Beckford stabbed Mackey and slit her throat during a confrontation in the parking lot of the Mayfair Hotel on February 20, 2021.
Mackey died in hospital on February 22, 2021.

Man acquitted of teacher’s murder is killed

NASSAU- A man who was released from prison last year was fatally shot early Tuesday morning.

Armando Sargent’s life came to a violent end when he was shot dead at the juncture of Beatrice Avenue and the Charles Saunders Highway after 12am.

His death comes seven months after he was acquitted on appeal of manslaughter, conspiracy to commit armed robbery and attempted armed robbery.

Those convictions stemmed from the November 11, 2015 murder of popular elementary school teacher Joyelle McIntosh, who was shot as she swerved to avoid a man who was lying in her car’s path as she drove along Parkgate Road.

McIntosh’s car crashed into a wall and she died on the scene. A gunman fired a shot at her then-13-year-old son as he ran from the car.

On the prosecution’s case, Makavelli Tinker, then 17, was the shooter. They alleged that Sargent was the lookout and Johnny Mackey was the decoy.

The Court of Appeal on December 22, 2021 quashed the convictions of Mackey and Sargent on the basis that there was no evidence that they knew Tinker was armed with a gun. The Court did not order a retrial.

Tinker’s conviction was overturned as well; however, he’s on bail awaiting a retrial for murder, attempted murder, and attempted armed robbery.

For his part, Mackey was convicted of robbery and sentenced to one year in prison in March 2022.

Sick gun convict freed on $10k appeal bail

0

NASSAU – An American man with a chronic illness was on Friday freed on $10,000 cash bail as he awaits an appeal against his one-year prison sentence for gun and ammunition possession.

Ronald Moorehead Jr received the sentence after pleading guilty to the offenses at his arraignment before Senior Magistrate Ancella Evans on June 22.

The day before, security screeners at the Leonard Thompson International Airport in Marsh Harbour, Abaco called police after they found a .380-caliber pistol and five rounds of ammunition in his luggage.

As a result, police arrested and charged Moorehead, who was unrepresented at his arraignment.

His family retained Christina Galanos following the verdict, and she filed an urgent application for bail pending appeal because Moorehead has a severe case of type 1 diabetes.

Acting Deputy Director of Public Prosecution’s Cordell Frazier did not object to Moorehead’s release after prison commissioner Doan Cleare swore an affidavit, saying the prison lacked the manpower and resources to deal with his condition, which requires around-the-clock monitoring.

Authorities allowed Moorehead to keep his cellphone because he uses it to operate his Omnipod insulin pump to adjust the dosages of medicine depending on his meal choice.

Because of Moorehead’s extraordinary situation, the court granted him bail on the condition that he returns for his appeal. Moorehead had to surrender his passport to the court; however, he can leave the jurisdiction.

If he fails to return, the $10,000 could be forfeited to the Crown.

Murder suspect’s denied bail for his safety

0

NASSAU- A man accused of shooting dead two men and injuring a woman in March has been denied bail for his protection.

The Court of Appeal on Thursday agreed with a judge that 22-year-old Dentwan Grant should remain in custody for his safety.

Grant is charged with the murders of accused killer Franklyn Glinton, Clinton McClean and the attempted murder of Brianna Grant.

Significantly, Glinton was on bail for murder when he was shot dead.

The murder and attempted murder charges arise from a shooting at Millar’s Heights on March 5.

Prosecutors contend that Grant could become a murder victim if released, as an attempt has already been made on his life.

They allege that the murders of Glinton and McClean were payback for an attempt on Grant’s life.

Justice Guillimina Archer-Minns denied Grant bail on May 6, citing concerns over his safety.

The Court of Appeal found that her reason for denying bail was correct and upheld her decision.

The Court also noted that any retaliation on Grant could jeopardise the safety of others in the area.

The ruling comes as authorities have expressed concern about the number of people on bail who’ve been murdered.
