Mislabeled package results in cocaine seizure

0

Florida police say the wrong address on a FedEx package resulted in the arrest of a Bahamian woman on drug charges.

Perez Perissa Ferguson, 26, of Grand Bahama, faces cocaine importation charges after law enforcement intercepted 2.9 kilos of cocaine shipped from The Bahamas.

According to a probable cause affidavit, FedEx received the package on June 16.

However, they could not deliver the package containing “face masks” to Dave Black at 851 NW Terrace, Apartment 2220, Fort Lauderdale, Florida to the abandoned address.

As a result, the package was returned to FedEx.

Over the next two days, Ferguson repeatedly called FedEx about the status of the delivery, the affidavit said.

After several corrections to the delivery address, Ferguson asked FedEx to deliver the package to her at 821 NW Terrance, Apartment 2220, Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

The repeated address changes raised suspicions and FedEx alerted the authorities.

When law enforcement searched the package, they found multiple packages of cocaine.

They removed the drugs and replaced it with sham cocaine and placed the apartment under surveillance. The officers saw Ferguson at the residence, the affidavit said.

Abandoned delivery

On June 18, an undercover agent contacted Ferguson and arranged to deliver the package to her at the Broward Mall.

After driving around the parking lot, Ferguson eventually parked. Damian Sherman accompanied her.

Then Ferguson sent a text message to the undercover agent, asking if he was police.

Ferguson later arranged to collect the package at the movie theater entrance to the mall.

However, the undercover agent approached the theatre without the package.

Sherman called the agent asking the location of the package. He replied that he had left in his vehicle.

Afterwards, Ferguson called saying she had decided not to collect the package.

Law enforcement stopped Ferguson’s truck and arrested her.

Post arrest, Ferguson claimed she had been hired to collect the package and take it to a person called Zar for $75.

Ferguson said she owns a delivery business. She was in Florida on a visitor’s visa.

Ferguson’s arraignment will take place on July 6.

NASSAU-The alleged masterminds of a cheque fraud ring that ripped off HR Business Solutions of tens of thousands of dollars have pleaded guilty.

Cousins Tristian Rolle, 33, and Trevado Taylor, 32, surrendered over the weekend after police circulated wanted posters for them.

They were named in court last week as the ringleaders of the gang that ripped off HR Business Solutions over more than $20,000.

Fellow cheque fraudsters Carlos Valdez, 38; Arnell Armbrister, 24; Kendrea Smith, 27; Anavia Thompson, 22; Giselle Capernarus, 30; and Chiquia Rolle, 26, claimed the men recruited them to take part in the scam in 2018. The six self-proclaimed pawns collectively cashed forged cheques, totaling $19,600.

At a court appearance today, Rolle and Taylor admitted to cashing forged HR Business Solutions cheques together valued at $4,700.

Forbes ordered the men to repay by the money by August 30 and placed them on probation for 12 months.

Valdez, Armbrister, Smith, Thompson, Capernarus and Rolle were released on the same conditions last week.

Teen claims he found drugs in park

NASSAU-A teenager told police that he found marijuana while walking through a park.

Police stopped Perez Collie, 19, around 9:50am on June 20 at Commonwealth Boulevard and Antigua Street.

When they searched his bag, they found 22 drug-filled foil packets, totaling 1 ½ ounces, in his bag.

He claimed he had found bag and the drugs on the park in Elizabeth Estates but admitted he was planning to smoke it.

At a court appearance today, Collie admitted to possession of marijuana with intent to supply.

He didn’t have a lawyer and told Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes he had been smoking since he was in the eighth grade.

Collie said he was headed home when he saw the bag and checked it out of curiosity and decided to keep the drugs for himself.

Collie said that he doesn’t have a job at the moment and someday hoped to become a marine biologist.

The magistrate told Collie that he wanted him to succeed and that a conviction would derail his ambitions.

As a result, Magistrate Forbes gave Collie a chance to keep a clean record.

He has to undergo drug counselling and testing for 12 months. If Collie fails or drops out of the programme, he’ll be jailed for four months.

‘Daddi Whites’ to appeal conviction

0

NASSAU-The lawyer for Internet personality and comedian Jonathan “Daddi Whites” Russell plans to file an appeal against his conviction today.

Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes jailed 38-year-old Russell for three months after he pleaded guilty to cruelty to children on arraignment on June15.

The charge stemmed from a controversial video of Russell giving a toddler a drink from a beer bottle as the child’s father, Lionel Hart Sr., 55, held him.

Bahamas Court News understands that attorney Bjorn Ferguson intends to argue that the magistrate made a mistake in accepting Russell’s plea.

Russell, who didn’t have a lawyer, disputed the prosecution’s claim that he gave the child beer.

According to Russell, the beer bottle really contained soda. He also said the child didn’t test positive for alcohol.

Known for his crass videos, Russell told the court, I’ve done thousands of videos and this is the worst video I’ve ever did.”

Hart was also jailed for three months after admitting the cruelty to children charge. But he, too, said he didn’t know what was in the bottle.

Ferguson will also lodge an appeal for Hart. He intends to seek bail pending appeal for both men.

He conceded he was wrong to permit Russell, whom he just met, to give his child a drink without learning what was inside. The child is now in the custody of his aunt.

They faced a maximum of two years in prison. However, the court considered their lack of previous convictions and early admission of guilt in sentencing.

Donna Vasyli seeks to block retrial for husband’s murder

NASSAU- Donna Vasyli, the prime suspect in her husband’s murder, hopes her attorneys can convince an appellate court to end her case for good.

The Court of Appeal will on July 20 consider whether she should face a second trial for the murder of orthotics tycoon Phillip Vasyli.

Police arrested Donna, his wife of 34 years, after he was found stabbed to death in their luxury home in Old Fort Bay on March 24,2015.

In November 2015, Donna was convicted of the killing of her 59-year-old husband, and sentenced to 20 years jail.

However, appeal judges overturned her conviction and ordered a retrial in 2017.

A judge freed Donna on $250,000 bail soon after.

Then, in January 2020 Donna made a final appeal to the Privy Council to block the retrial.

But in March, the Privy Council directed the Court of Appeal to reconsider its earlier decision for a retrial.

The Privy Council removed the judgment from its site since a retrial is possible.

On Thursday, D’angelo Adderley admitted to punching Delva in the eye in the row over the parked car.

NASSAU-A Golden Gates resident suspected of robbing two businesses in a week says he’s innocent.

Devon Carey, one of two men sought in the incidents, made his first court appearance on Friday. He did not have a lawyer.

Prosecutors say Carey, 24, tried to kill Samuel Strachan, owner of J & S Convenience on Joe Farrington Road, after he was robbed of $300 on June 9. A gunman shot Strachan in the shoulder during the hold-up.

Also, prosecutors say Carey, with others, robbed Ghisele Lubin of $761.59, the property of Mac Grab Convenience Store, located in Jubilee Gardens, on June 3.

Carey did not have to enter pleas to the charges when he appeared before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes on Friday.

However, Carey told the court that police had charged the wrong man.

He said investigators showed him surveillance footage of both incidents and he was not in either video.

Magistrate Forbes told Carey that he’d have a chance to tell his side in the Supreme Court.

Prosecutors plan to send the cases to the Supreme Court by a voluntary bill of indictment on September 30.

Magistrate Forbes remanded Carey to prison. However, he can apply for bail in the Supreme Court.

Carey faced an unrelated charge of threats of death. He pleaded not guilty to claims that he threatened to kill Brittany Williams on June 8.

Magistrate Forbes will begin Carey’s death threat trial on September 30.

Sammi Starr said the worst part of the experience was that his children witnessed the robbery while looking outside. He said they called out to him “not realising what was happening.”

Sammi Starr wrote, “All I was saying and praying to God was, ‘Please don’t kill me in front of my family and, for that matter, at all because I have so much to live for.’”
