Police are investigating are a drive-by shooting through Dumping Ground Corner left one man dead and another man in hospital.

Both victims were taken to hospital and one of them died on arrival. The condition of the second victim is unknown.

Former fugitive charged with murder

NASSAU- A murder suspect who evaded Bahamian authorities for seven years has been denied bail.

Jermaine Scott, 37, is charged with the April 27, 2013 murder of Alejandro Bain outside the Southside River Restaurant and Bar.

Scott, of Dominica Way, Golden Gates, was recently deported from the United States to The Bahamas.

Prosecutors say that Scott shot Bain in front of 50 witnesses during a domestic dispute.

Scott made his first court appearance on the murder charge and was ordered held in jail.

Scott returns to court on December 3.

Scorned man admits smashing woman’s window

NASSAU- A scorned man smashed a woman’s window after she rejected his sexual advances, a court heard.

Murder suspect Dwayne Kelly threw a rock through Annette Metellus’ bedroom window, which broke a dresser mirror on October 13.

Kelly, who’s on bail while awaiting a second trial  the 2012 murder of Philario Simmons, was rapping to Metellus outside her mother’s home on East Street.

But she ended their  conversation when he begged for sex.

Kelly admitted the charge of causing damage at his arraignment before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes.

The court ordered Kelly to reimburse Metellus $683.76 to avoid spending two months in prison.

Kelly faces charges of assault and violating the curfew that stem from the same incident.

He will go to trial on those charges on December 15 and was granted $1,000 bail.

Appeal Court rejects murder suspect’s bail bid

NASSAU- A murder suspect will remain in custody pending trial after the Court of Appeal supported a judge’s decision to refuse him bail.

Justice Bernard Turner on September 7 denied Marcello McKenzie’s bail application.

On July 3, prosecutors charged McKenzie, of Shrimp Road, and Jamaal Armbrister with the June 28 murder of Godfrey “Rob” Sawyer.

According to police, Sawyer was on the porch of his Nassau Village home round 11pm when he got into an argument with two men. During the dispute, one of the men pulled a gun and shot Sawyer multiple times before they fled in a white minibus.

Police arrested the suspects, both 35, when they stopped the getaway vehicle after a brief chase in nearby Pinewood Gardens.

 

Man denies shopping spree with stolen cash

NASSAU- A man has denied stealing nearly $15,000 from a woman’s bank account.

Prosecutors say 25-year-old Kristen Johnson, also known as Jason Butler, of Wild Guava Street, stole $14,574.26 from Ashley Munroe’s FirstCaribbean account between August 18 and September 25.

Then, they say Johnson spent $4,350.82 of the stolen cash on two iPhone 11 Pros, two pairs of Yves Saint Laurent stilettos, and clothing.

He denied charges of stealing and money laundering at his arraignment before Senior Magistrate Carolyn Vogt-Evans and was denied bail.

Johnson, who is represented by Ian Cargill, will stay behind bars if a Supreme Court judge doesn’t grant him bail.

Johnson’s trial is set to begin on November 26.

Inland revenue manager denies extortion charge

NASSAU- A senior revenue manager at the Department of Inland Revenue has been remanded to prison on an extortion charge.

Hiram Cox, 51, of East Lake Drive, Coral Harbour, is accused of demanding $10,000 payment from Preston Rolle on August 25.

Cox, who is represented by Alex Morley, denied the allegation at his arraignment before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt today.

Cox returns to court for a status hearing on February 23, 2021.

Cox will have to seek bail before a judge in the Supreme Court.

In 2013, Cox, a former stockbroker at CFAL, devised a scheme that allowed managers at Commonwealth Bank to sell shares they had acquired through an employee stock option plan on the market.

The managers bought the shares at the option price of $6 and then resold them to third parties at the market price, which was between $8 and $10.50 per share.

The Court of Appeal overturned the conviction in 2015.

 

Former athlete accused of stealing food

NASSAU- Former national athlete Jean Vanderpool was arrested and jailed for stealing food from his neighbour during a burglary.

Vanderpool, 51, of Arundel Street, has been stuck in prison without bail on a burglary and theft charge since August 14.

Prosecutors allege that Vanderpool’s neighbour, Glenn Woodside, was awoken by a noise coming from his kitchen around 3:40am on August 11.

When Woodside went to investigate, he saw Vanderpool leaving. Woodside discovered that two cans of corned beef, two boxes of macaroni and cheese, a can of tuna and a can of cream were missing.

Due to the burglary charge, Vanderpool faces trial in the Supreme Court.

But lawyers from the Office of the DPP haven’t prepared the voluntary bill of indictment that will send to the case to the Supreme Court.

Vanderpool next returns to court on December 2.

Sentence cut for man who stole from stepmom

NASSAU- A thief has had his sentence cut by a third on appeal.

Wade Mackey was jailed for 18 months after he admitted to breaking into his stepmother’s service station during the five-day coronavirus lockdown in April.

Mackey, 27, pleaded guilty to shop breaking and stealing at his arraignment before Magistrate Samuel Mckinney.

The court also ordered Mackey to compensate Letisha Mackey $135 for the stolen snacks to avoid spending an extra six months in prison.

The Court of Appeal reduced the sentence to six months and quashed the order for compensation.

Ms. Mackey discovered the break-in at W and W Service Station in Greencastle, Eleuthera on April 15.

The thief entered the establishment between April 9 and April 14 and stole drinks and snacks.

Ms. Mackey told police that she suspected her stepson was responsible.

He told police that he had stolen the items because his stepmother owed him money and mistreated him.

79 year old arrested after gun found in vehicle

A 79-year-old man was arrested in Grand Bahama after police allegedly found a loaded gun in his vehicle.

Authorities said members of the Flying Squad went to a home on Thackery Street to execute a search warrant on Wednesday.

The officers allegedly found a pistol loaded with found rounds of .380 ammunition when they searched the vehicle. As they continued the search, they allegedly found an additional four rounds of ammunition.
