Man in critical condition after First Street shooting

NASSAU- A man sustained life-threatening injuries during a shooting Friday afternoon.

Police and paramedics responded to the shooting at First Street, off Palm Tree Avenue, around 3pm.

The victim, who was shot in the back and leg, was ambushed from behind by a gunman as he got out of his car.

Police said the man is in critical condition at hospital.

The shooter remains at large.

Suspect charged in fatal Bain Town shooting

A 26-year-old has been charged with a shooting that killed one man and seriously injured another man in a drive-by shooting.

Prosecutors have charged Lecardo Fredrix, of Rupert Dean Lane, with murder and attempted murder over the October 16 shooting at Dumping Ground Corner.

Devon Brown was killed and Javon Rolle survived the shooting.

Since he’ll be tried in the Supreme Court, Fredrix didn’t have to enter pleas to the charges when he made his initial appearance before Magistrate Ambrose Armbrister today.

Fredrix, who is represented by Attorney Philip Hilton, returns to court on December 1 to receive a voluntary bill of indictment.

He’ll remain in custody until then unless a Supreme Court judge grants him bail.

Appeal Court orders retrial for Donna Vasyli

NASSAU- The Court of Appeal today ordered that Donna Vasyli face a new trial for her husband, Philip’s murder.

Police arrested Donna, his wife of 34 years, after he was found stabbed to death in their luxury home in Old Fort Bay on March 24,2015.

Donna remains free on $250,000 bail, pending trial.

In November 2015, a judge sentenced Donna to 20 years’ imprisonment after a jury found her guilty of murder.

However, appeal judges overturned her conviction and ordered a retrial in 2017.

Then, in January 2020 Donna made a final appeal to the Privy Council to block the retrial.

But in March, the Privy Council directed the Court of Appeal to reconsider its earlier decision for a retrial.

 

 

People smuggler awaits sentence

FLORIDA- An American man is awaiting sentencing after he pleaded guilty to smuggling 13 undocumented migrants from Bimini.

The U.S Coast Guard stopped Milton Morgan Ferrell III on the evening of March 13 at approximately 18 nautical miles east of Key Biscayne, Florida.

The owner of the 24-foot Sea Fox 286 Commander had reported the vessel stolen from a North Bay Village three days earlier.

Initially, Ferrell identified himself as the captain. He said that he and his girlfriend had left Coconut Grove, Florida with 13 friends for The Bahamas.

However, Ferrell could not identify any of them by name.

That’s when, Ferrell told the U.S. Coast Guard crew, “Y’all know what this is. I tried and I got caught.”

In his post-Miranda statement, Ferrell said that he and his girlfriend went to Bimini on the stolen boat on March 11.

He met up with a friend, identified only as “Joe,” who had arranged the smuggling trip.

Ferrell admitted to smuggling migrants from The Bahamas to the United States in the past but said his most recent trip was his biggest load.

Ferrell had $3,600 in U.S. and Bahamian currency at the time of his arrest.

Some of the immigrants said that they been kept in a safe house in Bimini prior to the smuggling trip.

They said they had paid the smugglers between $3,000 and $6,000 each while in The Bahamas and were expected to pay an additional $3,000 to $6,000 when they arrived in the United States.

 

Man broke TV in row with ex

NASSAU- A man destroyed his ex-girlfriend’s TV after he shoved her during a row.

D’Quille Edgecombe pleaded guilty to damage and assault when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

The court heard how Edgecombe went to the woman’s home on October 14 and they got into an argument.

He pushed her before dropping her Vizio TV, valued at $515.41, on the ground.

Edgecombe told Magistrate Ambrose Armbrister that he was sorry for what he’d done.

He said he wanted to pay his ex for the TV and move on with his life.

The magistrate placed Edgecombe on probation for four months in addition to making an order for compensation.

If Edgecombe violates his probation, he’ll have to pay a $150 fine to avoid a three-week prison sentence.

Jealous ex smashed windows and slashed tires

A jealous man caused thousands of dollars in damage after he saw his ex-girlfriend with another man.

Jian Dorsett, 39, showed up at his former girlfriend’s parents’ home uninvited—but the woman he came to see was entertaining another man.

He flew into a rage when asked to leave. Before he left, dumped Dorsett broke windows to the home, smashed the windscreen and slashed the tires on a bus parked outside the home.

Dorsett caused an estimated $2,000 in damage to the property.

He pleaded guilty to causing damage at his arraignment.

He said that he was sorry for what he’d done.

But the court heard that Dorsett had broken windows at the home in the past.

Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes ordered Dorsett to compensate his victim for the damage by December.

He’s also been banned from approaching his ex-girlfriend an her family.

Additionally, Dorsett has to take anger management classes whileon probation.

The father-of-four could spend six months in prison if he breaches any of the court’s orders.

Man denied bail on child rape charges

NASSAU- A man accused of sexually assaulting a child and abetting the rape of another child has been denied bail.

Prosecutors say Chervin Brown, 22, of Gamble Heights, raped a 14-year-old girl in January and February of 2020.

Brown is also accused of aiding and abetting the rape of a 17-year-old girl on June 4.

Brown didn’t have to enter pleas to the charges when he appeared before Magistrate Ambrose Armbrister. Brown returns to court on Dece

Man wanted in 2018 murder appears in court

NASSAU- A wanted murder suspect has been charged two years after he allegedly killed a father in front of his children in 2018.

Kyle Hepburn, 32, of Sea Breeze, made his first court appearance today on murder and attempted murder charges after he was deported from the U.S. on October 6.

Prosecutors say that Hepburn shot and killed Wilton Brown during an attempted hold-up outside his home in Hollywood Subdivision on June 9, 2018.

Brown was in the car with his young children when he was shot by a gunman, who had followed him home.

Hepburn wasn’t required to enter a plea to the charge when he appeared before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes.

He was denied bail and returns to court on December 8.

Smuggler caught after boat ran out of gas

FLORIDA- A Bahamian boat captain whose boat ran out of fuel during a human smuggling voyage has pleaded not guilty.

The U.S. Coast Guard arrested Vonne Rolle, of Abaco, on August 3 after they rescued his stranded vessel with 13 undocumented migrants on board, off Port St. Lucie, Florida.

After encountering rough seas caused by Tropical Storm Isaias, Rolle’s boat experienced engine failure before it ran out of fuel, according to a federal complaint.

Officials found the boat adrift with no water, food or life vests.

Some of the migrants told officials that they asked Rolle to return to The Bahamas due to the bad weather, but he refused.

Authorities deported Rolle from the US in 2018 after he spent 18 months in prison for the same crime.

As a deportee, Rolle was permanently banned from re-entry.

Rolle, 29, denied charges of conspiracy to induce aliens to enter the United States, encouraging and inducing aliens to enter the United States, and bringing aliens to the United States at an arraignment via Zoom on October 14.

One killed in Bain Town double shooting

Police are investigating are a drive-by shooting through Dumping Ground Corner left one man dead and another man in hospital.

Both victims were taken to hospital and one of them died on arrival. The condition of the second victim is unknown.
