New Magistrate gets top post

Defence attorney Roberto Reckley (left) was sworn in as Acting Chief Magistrate by the Chief Justice Sir Ian Winder

Nassau, Bahamas – A newcomer to the magistracy has been named as acting chief magistrate.

Defense lawyer Roberto Reckley was officially appointed on Tuesday, July 12 to manage magistrates with decades of experience.

The selection has caused some magistrates to question the selection process.

With just 13 years at the bar, Mr Reckley will be managing people who’ve been magistrates longer than he’s been a lawyer.

Mr Reckley is filling in while Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt is on vacation.

On her return, she will be sworn in as an acting Supreme Court judge—a vacancy created by the appointment of Senior Justice Bernard Turner as an acting appellate judge.

During a farewell party, Ferguson-Pratt asked staff to support Reckley.

She said, “I want to put your full support behind Mr Reckley; that’s a gift you could give to me. Give him your full support.

“Don’t get in the corner and backbite and undermine, saying why him? Come on, he couldn’t appoint himself. So, support him, and by so doing, you’re doing good for yourself.”
