Nassau, BAHAMAS- A mother has been sentenced to three years for letting her abusive partner murder her four-year-old daughter.
The killer Darion Smith took a plea deal and was sentenced to 25 years.
Smith inflicted catastrophic injuries on D’onya “Bella” Walker while her mother, Ostonya Walker, was at work. The incident happened on November 5, 2021.
The youngster had healing injuries and current injuries on her body.
Prosecutors charged Walker with exposing her child to grievous harm and child cruelty for leaving Bella in Smith’s care. They alleged that on some occasions, Walker and Smith assaulted Bella together.
In calling for a five-year sentence, the prosecutor, Janet Munnings said, Walker had not shown any remorse for the role that she played in her daughter’s death.
The prosecutor said Walker failed to protect her daughter from her abusive boyfriend, but instead left a vulnerable child in his care.
Munnings said, “From her conduct, she loved her live-in boyfriend more than she loved her own daughter.”
