Man who threatened to kill mom shoots Andros cop

ANDROS – A suspect disarmed a police sergeant and shot him during a domestic violence call on Tuesday.

Three police officers went to a home in Staniard Creek, Andros around 9am in response to a complaint that a man had threatened to kill his mother.

The officers had quelled at a disturbance at the same home on Monday night.

When the officers arrived at the home, the man picked up a conch and threatened them.

During the struggle that ensued, the suspect disarmed Sergeant 2690 Dean and shot him in the left leg.

Another officer shot, subdued and disarmed the suspect.

Sergeant Dean and the suspect were airlifted to New Providence for further treatment. Their injuries are described as non-life-threatening.

In December 2020, prosecutors charged a man with attempted murder after he allegedly shot two police officers in Marsh Harbour, Abaco.

Prosecutors say Marty Sawyer, 54, shot Superintendent Wendell Smith, and Corporal 3688 Andre Linden with a shotgun.

Sawyer allegedly ambushed the officers when they answered a domestic call at his home on November 24.

One of the officers received shotgun pellet wounds to the face; the other received got pellets in the face and stomach.

The officers returned fire, hitting Sawyer in his right neck. He appeared in court after he was released from hospital on December 18.
