Man shot by police granted bail

Nassau, Bahamas- An Abaco man shot in the leg after he allegedly pointed a handgun on a policeman has been given bail.

Jimmy Belfort, 29, is charged with assault with a deadly weapon and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition over the Christmas Day confrontation with police.

Prosecutors allege that Belfort fled his home in Dundas Town when a team of police officers came to execute a search warrant.

One of those officers shot Belfort when he allegedly pulled a loaded .45 pistol from his waist and pointed it at the officer.

Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt set Belfort’s bail at $7,500 with one or two sureties for Belfort.

As a condition of bail he has to report to the Marsh Harbour Police Station on Tuesdays and Thursdays until the conclusion of his trial.

Belfort’s trial will be held in Abaco.

He’s set to appear before Senior Magistrate Ancella Evans on February 3 for a trial date to be fixed.
