Why police won’t release body camera footage

Nassau, Bahamas- Authorities have said the January 10 fatal shooting of an unarmed marine was captured on video.

Officers say footage from a police-worn body camera shows 39-year-old Rodney Adderley attacking a corporal who was holstering his gun when he was shot.

According to media reports, Adderley’s family want to see the footage for themselves.

Many find it hard to believe that a decorated member of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force did what police said.

Releasing the video could go a long way to building trust among people who believe Adderley’s shooting wasn’t justified, but the video hasn’t been made public—and according to the police commissioner it won’t be.

Even if the Freedom of Information Act were fully in force, the footage wouldn’t be released.

That’s because the Act exempts law enforcement from disclosing anything that could affect an investigation or trial.

However, this doesn’t mean that Adderley’s family will never see the footage.

Officials have said there will be a coroner’s inquest. As interested parties to the proceedings, they will receive the footage and other evidence prior to the hearing.
