Straw Market arsonist fined for vagrancy

NASSAU- The man convicted of setting the fire that destroyed the Straw Market in 2001 has been fined for vagrancy.

Cordney Brian Gardiner, 47, was arrested on April 2 after he was found at Polhemus Pharmacy without lawful excuse.

Gardiner pleaded guilty and was fined $300 or two months in prison.

Back in 2003, Gardiner was sentenced to 12 years’ imprisonment after he was convicted of four counts of arson.

On September 4, 2001 Gardiner deliberately set the fire that destroyed the Straw Market; the Ministry of Tourism’s headquarters; Beaumont House, home to several offshore banks, shops and lawyers’ offices, and Colony Place, which housed shops and a restaurant.
