NASSAU – A member of singer Sean Kingston’s entourage was arrested after he was caught with 17 grams of marijuana that he claimed he received as a gift.
Steve Chokpelle’s arrest came on December 10, just one day after Kingston performed at the SLS Baha Mar hotel.
Chokpelle, a singer signed to Kingston’s label, was headed to the next tour stop when authorities at the Lynden Pindling International Airport found the drugs in his bag.
Chokpelle, who performs under the name Yung Muse, pleaded guilty to drug possession at his arraignment before Senior Magistrate Derence Rolle-Davis.
However, he said that he had no idea that marijuana was illegal here since an unnamed person at the bar gave him the drugs at the hotel’s bar.
Chokpelle said, “But the fact that he was giving it to me, and the conversations I had with the taxi drivers, the guy who picked us up, I thought it was legal.
“I fell short on that part and I apologize for that. I was here for one day and I was never disrespectful to the country. I travel all over for work. On behalf of myself, I apologize to The Bahamas. I hope you guys can find it in your heart to forgive me and send me back on my way.”
The magistrate fined him $500.
At first, Chockpelle claimed that he didn’t have any money since Kingston’s company had paid for his accommodations.
However, he got the money after making a phone call.
