Nassau, Bahamas- A policeman shot and killed an unarmed off-duty marine who allegedly tried to disarm him early Monday morning.
The first victim of police-involved shooting of 2022 happened around 4am on January 10. He has been identified Leading Seaman Rodney Adderley.
According to police, officers from the Operations Unit were on patrol when they responded to a complaint about a “suspicious vehicle parked on Dunmore Avenue, Chippingham.”
The officers saw a man inside the car that was parked near a vacant lot and ordered him outside.
After complying with the command to leave the car, the man allegedly “charged at one of the officers.”
Police said that the officer shot the man as he attempted to disarm him.
A coroner’s inquest will be heard after police complete their investigations. An inquest is not a trial and does not determine criminal or civil liability.
Police shot 21 people in 2021 and killed 13 of them.
