Cop kills stepson at their home

NASSAU- A police officer shot and killed his stepson Wednesday night.

According to police reports, the shooting victim allegedly put a knife to his mother’s throat during an argument at their apartment on St. Alban’s Drive.

Her husband, reportedly a police reservist, allegedly shot his stepson to protect his wife.

The matter is under under “active investigation,” according to a police release.

Man will serve no jail time for shooting two cops

NASSAU- A man who shot two police officers investigating a disturbance at his home will not serve any prison time as part of a plea deal.

Marty Sawyer, 54, who is white, was initially charged with the attempted murder of the Black officers. However, he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of use of deadly means of harm when he appeared before Senior Justice Bernard Turner.

Sawyer shot Chief Superintendent Wendell Smith and Corporal 3688 Andre Linden with a 12-gauge shotgun on November 24, 2020 when they arrived at his home in Marsh Harbour, Abaco to investigate a domestic disturbance. Sawyer also shot himself in the neck.

The officers and the suspect were airlifted to New Providence, and they received treatment at Doctors’ Hospital.

Following his release from hospital, Sawyer was charged with the shooting.

However, he never spent a day in prison because he was granted emergency bail soon after his initial court appearance.

Sawyer could never step foot in the Bahamas Department of Corrections in relation to this case, provided he stays out of trouble for two years.

He paid a $10,000 fine, and he has 60 days to pay compensation to the officer.

Smith will receive $35,000 and Linden will get $25,000.

However, if Sawyer commits any of crime before October 6, 2023, he will be sentenced to five years’ imprisonment.

Failure to make the compensation payment will result in a concurrent sentence of two years in prison.

Additionally, Sawyer is banned for life from owning a firearm.

Alex Maillis represents Sawyer. The Director of Public Prosecutions approved the terms of the plea agreement.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Man arrested after missing teen is found

A man was arrested after a missing teen was found at his home, authorities said.

The 15-year-old girl’s parents reported her missing from home on September 15.

After circulating a missing poster for Mariah Culmer, police said she was found on October 4 at a home in Pine Forest Subdivision in Eight Mile Rock.

The teen was in good health, according to police.

The adult could face criminal charges because it’s illegal for minors to sleep out without their parents’ permission.

Bahamians busted in drug sting

Florida – Two Bahamian men were arrested on drug dealing charges in an FBI sting in Florida.

Valentino Edgecome, 32, and Derrick Morley, 52, were arrested on September 28 after they sold of three kilos of cocaine to a confidential source for $84,000.

Authorities descended on the pair after the informant paid Edgecombe $84,000 for the drugs.

According to a complaint, Edgecombe sold a half-kilo of cocaine to the source for $14, 000 at the Dolphin Mall in Miami on August 6.

During a phone call later that evening, Edgecombe told the source to call him whenever he needed cocaine.

Edgecombe flew back to The Bahamas on August 15. He spoke to the source on September 8 and told him that when he returned to Florida, he could sell him six kilos for $168,000.

True to his word, Edgecombe returned to Florida on September 21. However, he didn’t know that authorities had him under surveillance. They documented several meetings between Edgecombe and Morley, a resident of Florida.

The following day, Edgecombe discussed the sale of the cocaine with the source while Morley was a passenger in his rental car.

Edgecombe returned to The Bahamas on September 23. However, he came back on September 28 with the intention of selling the source the cocaine. However, he told the source that he only had three kilos available.

Edgecombe and the source met to finalize the transaction. According to the complaint, Morley brought the drugs. The source retrieved the bag that contained the drugs after paying $84,000.

Man jailed for bus load of drugs

NASSAU- A man has been jailed after he led police on a high-speed chase in a bus laden with more than 3,000 pounds of ganja.

Theodore Ferguson, 54, was sentenced Monday to three years in prison, plus a $10,000 fine. He’ll spend an extra six months behind bars if he doesn’t pay the money before he completes his sentence.

After getting a tip, police went to Bacardi Road around 3:30am on September 30 to check it out.

The officers saw Ferguson driving bus number 2911 with its headlights off.

When the officers ordered Ferguson to stop, he tried to evade them, resulting in a high-speed chase.

The pursuit came to an end through a track road on Boatswain Hill and the driver fled into bushes.

Officers searched the bus and removed 100 bags of marijuana, weighing 3,053 pounds, with a street value of $3,053,000.

Police arrested Ferguson later that day and he confessed.

Ferguson pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to possess drugs and drug possession with intent to supply at his arraignment before Senior Magistrate Derence Rolle-Davis.

The magistrate refused a request from the prosecutor to have the bus used to transport the drugs confiscated to the Crown.

Shooting victim is sixth murder of the week

NASSAU- Police are investigating after a man was fatally shot in the head this morning.

The 21-year-old reportedly ran into a car repair business on Robinson Road in an attempt to escape his killer.

He was pronounced dead on the scene.

The incident is the sixth murder for the week.

3 men sought in $3m ganja bust

NASSAU – Three men abandoned a bus loaded with 3,000 pounds of marijuana during an early morning police pursuit.

Police received a tip that a jitney was transporting a load of drugs around 3am.

Officers from the Drug Enforcement and Operations Units pursued the bus into Boatswain Hill.

The occupants of the bus jettisoned several crocus bags of marijuana from the vehicle during the chase.

The suspects eventually fled into bushes, leaving behind 100 bags of marijuana.

The drugs weighed 3,053 pounds and have an estimated street value of $3,053,000.

3 dead in revenge killings

NASSAU- A 30-year-old man shot to death in Windsor Lane Wednesday was the latest victim of a spate of tit-for-tat killings in the area.

The victim was ambushed by a lone gunman as he walked east along Windsor Lane around 8:30pm.

His murder is believed to be payback for Tuesday’s murder of Kevin “Skeva” McKenzie.

McKenzie, 36, was shot dead in front of his home on Windsor Lane.

His murder was reportedly in retaliation for the September 19 murder of 24-year-old Walter “Rider” Johnson.

He was shot dead near his home on Milton Street.

Man killed one month after his co-accused

NASSAU – A man on bail for attempted murder was killed one month after his co-accused met the same violent end.

Kevin “Skeva” McKenzie, 36, was gunned down outside a home in a government housing community known as The Big Yard off Windsor Lane.

The incident happened around noon today.

Police charged McKenzie with the attempted murder of Richard Brown, just three months after he was acquitted on appeal of the 2014 murder of Sergeant Wayne Rolle.

Prosecutors say McKenzie, Eduardo Carey and Cleophus Smith pulled up alongside Richard Brown as he walked along East Street on August 9, 2019 and opened fire on him.

Ironically, Carey was murdered last month. Smith has bail for the case but he’s currently in custody for another case.

Man jailed for 215 pound marijuana bust

NASSAU- man caught with marijuana and ammunition in his home will spend at least three years in prison.

Hiram Rolle, 37, will spend an additional year in prison if he doesn’t pay a fine of $100,000.

Police seized 215 pounds of marijuana, five rounds of ammunition and a magazine for an assault rifle when they raided Hiram Rolle’s residence in Stapledon Gardens on September 22.

He pleaded guilty to drug possession with intent to supply, conspiracy to possess drugs with intent to supply, possession of a component part of a firearm and possession of ammunition.

Rolle was present when police executed the search warrant.

After the discovery, Rolle told the officers that his cousin had told him to “hold down the fort.”

Defense lawyer Dion Smith said Rolle had made a stupid mistake and he was remorseful.

This is not the first time that Rolle has been to prison.

He was sentenced to 2 ½ years for gun possession in 2017.

Police shot Rolle in the chest and back after he pointed a 9mm pistol at them during a pursuit.
