Ken Dorsett case dropped days before trial date

0

NASSAU- The Director of Public Prosecutions today dropped charges against a former government official accused of misconduct in public office, 10 days before his trial was supposed to begin.

Kenred Dorsett, the former Minister of Environment and Housing under a Perry Christie-led government, appeared before Senior Justice Bernard Turner today for a case management hearing.

However, prosecutors brought the proceedings against him to an end with the presentation of a nolle prosequi.

Dorsett’s trial was scheduled for March 21 through April 4.

In an unprecedented move, the DPP issued a press release and gave a reason for withdrawing the case.

According to the statement, the prosecution’s key witness, Jonathan Ash, was not willing to testify.

Without Ash’s testimony, there was insufficient evidence to proceed.

Ash was also the prosecution’s key witness in the corruption trial of former PLP Cabinet Minister Shane Gibson.

In 2019, a jury acquitted Gibson of bribery.

Last year, Justice Turner ruled that pursuant to the Prevention of Bribery Act, Gibson was entitled to costs as a result of his acquittal.

According to the Prevention of Bribery Act, government would reimburse Gibson for cost of his defense in the action.

NASSAU- A man reoffended months after his acquittal for the murder of Joyelle McIntosh, who was gunned down in front of her son in 2015.

Johnny Mackey, 31, of Bonaby Alley, had his convictions overturned by the Court of Appeal on December 22, 2021.

However, Mackey blew his second chance by mugging a man, stealing his chain and damaging his chain and glasses on March 6.

The incident happened outside the Esso Service Station on East Bay and Fowler Streets.

Nearby police officers arrested Mackey.

He was subsequently charged with robbery, causing damage and causing harm.

Mackey pleaded guilty at his arraignment before Magistrate Kara Turnquest-Deveaux on March 10.

She sentenced him to one year for robbery, six months for causing damage, and three months for causing harm. The sentences will be served concurrently.

McIntosh was killed during an attempted car jacking on Parkgate Road on November 11, 2015. Prosecutors said that Mackey acted as a decoy by lying in the street. A gunman opened fire on McIntosh’s car as she swerved to avoid Mackey.

Mackey was convicted of murder, attempted murder, conspiracy to commit armed robbery and attempted armed robbery.

The Court of Appeal quashed Mackey’s convictions because there was no evidence that he knew the shooter had a gun.

NASSAU-An ex-con who tossed a bag containing contraband into the prison compound last month has been fined $7,500.

Deangelo Neely, 34, of Pinewood Gardens, will spend one year in prison if he doesn’t pay the money.

On February 5, corrections officers on patrol saw a black plastic bag near the wall in the area of the piggery.

The officers seized the bag that contained six cell phones with SIM cards and chargers; 1 ½ pounds of marijuana; three cartons of Aspen cigarettes; and a carton of Backwood cigarettes before inmates working in the yard could retrieve them.

This method of smuggling removes the need to pay corrupt guards to bring in contraband.

Police arrested Neely, who has a prior conviction for drug possession with intent to supply, after his fingerprints were found on the bag and the contraband.

He pleaded guilty to drug possession with intent to supply and taking prohibited articles into a correctional facility at his arraignment before Magistrate Samuel McKinney.

The magistrate fined Neely $2,500 or six months in prison on the drug charge and $5,000 or one year in prison for the other prohibited items.

If he doesn’t pay the money, Neely will serve one year in prison as the sentences are concurrent.

NASSAU- A mistress who threatened to kill her love rival and smashed the glass of her lover’s car was spared jail yesterday.

Shecoya Davis, 34, of Cowpen Road, made multiple harassing phone calls to her lover’s long-suffering wife in 2021.

And on February 28, 2022, she used a pickaxe to break the front glass of her lover’s 2012 Honda Life, resulting in $300 in damage.

Davis pleaded guilty to two counts of threats of death and causing damage at her arraignment before Magistrate Samuel McKinney on March 7.

Davis began an affair with Chico Butler in 2019, two years after he married his wife.

Davis told police in January 2021, an unknown man, disfigured her by throwing acid in her face. She believes that Butler’s jilted wife arranged the attack.

However, police could not act her suspicion due to lack of evidence.

As a result, Davis said she embarked on a campaign of harassment against her love-rival.

Between January 2021 and May 2021, Davis made numerous calls to the wife. On multiple occasions, she threatened to send people to shoot up the wife’s home.

Additionally, Davis told the wife she would have someone shoot and kill her while she walked her dog.

Butler reportedly broke up with Davis in June 2021.

But, on December 17, 2021, Davis called the wife and told her that she would be dead before Christmas.

Davis shattered the glass to Butler’s car with a pick axe while he was at an electronics store on February 28.

Police arrested her on March 4. During her police interrogation,  Davis accused the wife of setting up the acid attack. Consequently, she said planned to make the wife’s life a living hell until she moved to Canada.

Magistrate McKinney placed Davis on probation for 18 months or the death threats. If she breaches the terms of her probation, she will have to pay a $1,500 fine to avoid spending six months in prison.

Butler also has to pay $300 in compensation for the damage to the car in order to avoid spending one month in prison.
