Ex-youth pastor jailed for molesting girl

0

NASSAU- A former youth pastor, who turned out to be a wolf in sheep’s clothing, has been jailed for eight years for sexually abusing an underage girl.

Colton Albury, a popular pastor who worked with thousands of young children, was exposed as a sexual predator by his victim in 2017.

On July 7, a jury found that Albury violated the girl from June 2016 through April 2017. The victim was 12 when the sexual abuse began; she was 13 when she told her parents about it.

Her parents met Albury when he was 11 while doing outreach with their church.

Albury, who grew up in an orphanage after his parents abandoned him and his siblings, was welcomed into his victim’s family at age 16.

Yet, he betrayed them by molesting their daughter.

The prosecution produced five pages of WhatsApp messages of the married, father-of-two begging the girl for sex.

In the raunchy messages, Albury told the child, “I don’t have to f*** you. Just let me play with it.”

He also told her that she was beautiful and that his wedding ring meant nothing to him.

Jurors accepted by a count of 7-2 that Albury caressed the girl’s thighs and breasts during tickling games.

His criminal behavior escalated to unlawful sexual intercourse when he used his fingers to penetrate the girl.

Senior Justice Bernard Turner sentenced Albury to eight years’ imprisonment for unlawful sexual intercourse and four years in prison for indecent assault. The sentences will be served together and take effect from July 7.

Erica Ingraham, the prosecutor, called for a sentence in the range of 10 to 15 years.

By contrast, defence lawyer Miranda Adderley suggested a sentence of two to five years.

NASSAU- A man on bail for murder was shot dead at the Blue Hill Farmer’s Market Friday night, hours after a mother and son were allegedly gunned down by a man on murder bail.

Andy Johnson, whose street name was Sip, was on the western side of the market when a lone gunman shot him multiple times before fleeing in a Nissan Cube.

Johnson, 40, who was convicted of selling drugs at the same market earlier this year, died at the scene. He was on bail for the 2019 murder of Brian Evans.

Meanwhile, police are looking for a suspect in a double murder that took place on Sutton Street Friday morning.

Police believe that Keron Brown, 33, of Baltic Avenue, could help them solve the murders of Bernadette Tynes and Bertram McPhee.

Police said Tynes and her son were talking when a gunman, with whom they had a dispute earlier, returned around 10am and shot them multiple times before he fled.

According to police, Brown, who is on bail for a 2013 murder, cut off his ankle bracelet a short time later.

Meanwhile, Tynes’ younger son, Makaveli Tinker, is on bail awaiting a retrial for the 2015 murder of Queen’s College teacher Joyelle McIntosh.

Sick inmate sentenced to 3 days for gun crime

0

NASSAU – Need to get out of jail? An affidavit from the Commissioner of Corrections might help.

The Court of Appeal on Monday sentenced gun convict Ronald Moorhead Jr to three days’ imprisonment, after Doan Cleare admitted in an affidavit that the prison lacked the manpower and resources to manage his Type 1 diabetes which requires around-the-clock monitoring.

Moorhead, 53, was jailed for one year on June 21 after he pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm and ammunition.

Police arrested Moorhead after officials at the airport in Marsh Harbour, Abaco found a handgun and five rounds of ammunition in his luggage as he prepared to return to the U.S.

Moorhead is licensed to carry the gun in his home state of Georgia.

But, he was freed on $10,000 bail on June 24—thanks to Cleare’s admission.

Appealing his original sentence, defense lawyer, Christina Galanos, said returning Moorhead to the prison could become a death sentence.

According to the U.S. State Department’s Human Rights Report, conditions at the country’s only prison “were harsh due to overcrowding, poor sanitation, poor ventilation, and inadequate medical care.”

The prosecution conceded that it would be inhumane to imprison Moorhead, and suggested a fine as an alternative sentence.

Galanos also suggested a $10,000 fine, the amount of his cash bail.

However, the Court of Appeal panel agreed that a fine is not an option under the Firearms Act.

Galanos then suggested a sentence of three days—the time Moorhead already spent in custody.

Having regard to Moorhead’s exceptional case, the Court quashed his 12-month sentence and imposed a sentence of three days, effective June 21.

The decision doesn’t mean that other people convicted of firearms offenses should expect a similar sentence.

That’s because the sentence factored in Moorhead’s exceptional circumstances.

Still, the too sick for jail argument could become an issue again, if the notoriously atrocious conditions at the prison don’t improve.
