Cellphones, shanks seized during prison raid

NASSAU- Authorities seized multiple items, including shanks and cell phones, during a raid at the Bahamas Department of Corrections.

The shakedown happened between 10pm on January 15 and 6am on January 16.

Officials seized 35 cellphone and charges, over 40 shanks, Wifi boxes, drugs and cigarette lighters.

During the raid, officers searched inmates and their cells.

Boater commits suicide as cops help him to shore

A boater allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with a shotgun while officers assisted him to shore on Sunday.

Police said the man described as an elderly Cacausian took his life while police officers were towing his boat.

Around 11am on January 15, officers from the Eleuthera Division responded to a vessel on distress report.

While assisting the boat to shore, the officers heard a single gunshot.

After they secured the vessel, the officers found the man dead in the cabin with a shotgun next to him.

Investigations are continuing.

Man killed in targeted attack

NASSAU- Two shooters killed a man in front of his home in a targeted attack on Sunday afternoon.

The incident happened shortly before 4pm on January 15 at Bahamas Boulevard in Flamingo Gardens.

Police said the victim was with two women when the killers arrived. They shot him multiple times and left his companions unscathed.

The man, who was unofficially identified as Hugh Bowe, died at the scene. He is the fifth murder victim of 2023.

Police said Bowe was known to them.

Meanwhile, a man is fighting for his life in hospital following another shooting on Sunday.

The shooting happened around 8:20pm on Rupert Dean Lane and Dunmore Street.

Police said the 24-year-old victim was outside his home when two gunmen shot him multiple times.

The victim is in critical condition at the hospital.

Police have arrested a 26-year-old in relation to the incident.

Charges dropped in Spy’s proceeds of crime case

NASSAU- Prosecutors have dropped their case against a businessman and his wife accused of possession of the proceeds of crime.

Police arrested Warren “Spy” Ellis, and his wife, April Dawkins-Ellis, after they found $US13,907 in their luggage at the Lynden Pindling International Airport in November 26, 2018.

They were headed to Canada when police arrested them.

Police charged the pair with removing the proceeds of crime and attempted exportation of restricted goods.

However, the case was dismissed last week after the prosecution withdrew the charges against them.

Inmate dies after fight

NASSAU- An inmate at the Bahamas Department of Corrections has died after getting into a fight with another inmate.

The 44-year-old complained of chest pains and breathing difficulties after the altercation on Friday, January 13.

He was taken to hospital, where he died.

Police are waiting for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Man robbed of car and cash at ATM

NASSAU- Police are looking for two men who robbed a man of his car and cash at a drive-through ATM.

The victim pulled up to the Commonwealth Bank ATM on Poinciana Drive around 11:30pm on January 12.

While using the machine, the victim was approached by two masked men dressed in dark clothing. One of the men had a gun.

The men robbed the man of an undisclosed amount of money and his black 2009 Nissan Note, license plate AQ6672, leaving him stranded.

In another incident, a man jumped out of his car while robbers  took him to an ATM.

The man met two masked robbers inside his Marshall Road home around 12:40am on Friday, January 13.

They robbed him of personal belongings at knifepoint before forcing him into his 2013 Honda Accord.

The robbers planned to take the victim to an ATM to get money. But the victim foiled the robbery plan by jumping out of his car at the intersection of Cowpen Road and Faith Avenue.

Police are also looking for two men who robbed a man in the Kemp Road area.

The victim was on St James Road around 12am on January 13 when the occupants of Honda Civic robbed him of a cellphone and other personal belongings.

Ex hotel worker accused of stealing from guest’s room

NASSAU- A man who worked at a Holiday Inn hotel has been accused of stealing cash from a guest’s room.

Weonsik Sung reported that $1,886 was stolen from his room on January 9.

Investigations led to 24-year-old T’ray Teron Forbes, who had previously worked at the hotel on Nassau and West Bay Streets.

Prosecutors say Forbes still had a key that hadn’t been deactivated to access Sung’s room.

Forbes denied charges of unlawful entry, stealing and receiving at his arraignment before Magistrate Shaka Serville.

His bail was set at $7,000 and he was ordered to wear an ankle monitor.

Forbes’s trial is set for July.

Cops hunt man who had unlawful sex with girl, 14

NASSAU- Police are looking for a man who allegedly had an unlawful sexual relationship with an underage girl.

Authorities believe that the 19-year-old man had relations with the 14-year-old someone between January 2 and 8 at her home in eastern New Providence.

According to Police Commissioner Clayton Fernander, the child was “seeing” the man.

However, she was unable to legally consent sex because she’s under 16.

Boy, 15, arrested after firing gun in street

Police arrested a 15-year-old student who they say was firing a high powered gun in the street on Wednesday.

Officers received a ShotSpotter alert concerning gunfire in the Wilton Street area shortly before 5pm, police said.

They also received calls from residents about a young man firing a gun in the area.

As a result, officers saturated the teen suspect at West Avenue, off Collins Avenue.

According to police, the teen gunman was in a fight with another student earlier in the day.

Man denies cutting friend’s throat in knife fight

NASSAU- A man is accused of cutting his friend’s throat after they got into a knife fight at a bar.

Prosecutors say Shawn Rolle, 46, caused grievous harm to Antonio Forbes, 48, on January 7.

Both men were injured during the incident.

Rolle pleaded not guilty to the charge at his arraignment before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt.

He was granted $5,000 bail and will return to court for trial on June 7.
