Man convicted of sex with teen

NASSAU- A man who claimed he was seduced by a child has been convicted of unlawful sexual intercourse.

Walter Gray, 29, is on remand, pending a sentencing hearing that will take place on February 28.

Prosecutors alleged that Gray and the girl had sex for the first time when he was 27 and she was 13. They had subsequent sexual encounters when she was 14.

Although the now 17-year-old victim testified that she asked Gray to take her virginity, she could not legally consent because she was under 16.

For his part, Gray tried to portray the child as fast and forward.

In his testimony, Gray claimed on one occasion, the girl put his penis in her mouth while he was trying to sleep.

Woman died of heart attack during arrest

NASSAU- A woman who died while being arrested by police died of natural causes, according to an autopsy.

Vonchelle Saunders had a fatal heart attack on January 15 at her home on Fritz Lane.

Since Saunders died of natural causes, a coroner’s inquest will not be held.

Police officers went to the home in response to a disturbance. They reportedly met Saunders naked and throwing bottles.

Saunders ran inside the home and allegedly continued throwing bottles at the officers. She became unresponsive after they subdued her.

The entire incident was captured on one of the officer’s body camera.

2 killed in separate shootings

NASSAU- Two men were shot dead in separate incidents between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

Police said a 32-year-old man was sitting outside a home on Shahs Street in Redland Acres around 9:30pm Tuesday when a gunman exited a black Suzuki and shot him multiple times.

The victim died at the scene. Police arrested an 18-year-old suspect in relation to the incident and are searching for a second suspect. Police also recovered the car in nearby bushes.

Police were called to another fatal shooting around 2am on Wednesday.

Residents of Armbrister Street in Fox Hill reported hearing multiple gunshots. When they went outside, they met a 30-year-old suffering from gunshot injuries inside his car.

The man, believed to be a BDF marine, died in hospital around 4am.

Man charged with rape of ex-girlfriend

NASSAU- A 24-year-old man is behind bars after he allegedly raped his ex-girlfriend.

Prosecutors say Philip Rolle went to the 28-year-old woman’s job on January 12 and forced her into his car. Then, he allegedly took her to St Stokes Cabana and raped her.

Rolle didn’t have to enter a plea to the rape charge when he appeared before Senior Magistrate Derence Rolle-Davis on January 17.

He was denied bail and the matter was adjourned to March.

Former gang member killed on way to work

NASSAU- A former gang member was shot and killed as he headed to work on Tuesday, January 17.

Police said 33-year-old Dominique Berry was driving west on Infantview Road when a car pulled across his, blocking his path.

The occupants of the vehicle fired into Berry’s Nissan Note multiple times, killing him on the scene.

Berry, a father of three, was previously affiliated with the Mad Ass gang. However, according to his family, he had become a productive member of society.

Pregnant mom of murdered child awaits sentencing

NASSAU- A mother who admitted to abusing her daughter prior to her murder is expecting another child.

Ostonya Walker, 30, has been remanded to prison to await sentencing for exposing four-year-old D’onya “Bella” Walker to grievous harm and child cruelty.

Walker’s live-in boyfriend Darion Smith was sentenced to 25 years in prison for Bella’s murder as part of a plea deal.

Smith beat the child on November 5, 2021 while Walker was at work, causing fatal injuries.

However, Walker admitted to physically abusing her daughter in the lead up to her death.

Justice Renae McKay will hear sentencing submissions on March 1 after receiving a probation report.

Public defender Dorsey McPhee said Walker is due to give birth soon.

Man shot dead in Abaco

NASSAU- Police officers in Abaco are investigating the island’s first murder of 2023 after a man was shot dead.

According to police, the 28-year-old victim was ambushed by a gunman after he pulled up to a home in Bahama Coral around 6:30 pm on January 16.

The killer shot the man multiple times before fleeing in a black Japanese car.

The victim has been unofficially identified as John Matthew, otherwise known as T-Boy.

The incident pushes the country’s murder count to six for the year.

Man, 29, arrested after baby dies

NASSAU – A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a three-month-old girl died while in his care.

The infant was brought to the hospital in an unresponsive state around 11am on Monday, January 16.

Police arrested a 29-year-old man who was watching the baby while the child’s mother was at work after officials noticed injuries to her face.

An autopsy will determine how the baby died.

25-year jail term for killing girlfriend’s 4-year-old girl

NASSAU – A man who beat and murdered his live-in girlfriend’s four-year-old daughter at their apartment has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.

Darion Smith pleaded guilty to the November 5, 2021 murder of D’onya “Bella” Walker when he appeared before Justice Renae McKay on January 16.

He would have faced a sentence in the range of 30 to 60 years if convicted following a trial.

With time off for good behaviour, Smith could serve 17 years.

Bella died hours after Smith made an emergency call reporting that the girl was not breathing.

Bella had been left in Smith’s care by her mother while she was at work.

An autopsy determined that Bella had suffered multiple traumatic injuries.

Man back in prison on new murder charge

NASSAU- A man on bail for murder and attempted murder is back behind bars on new charges.

Mario Cuffe appeared before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt on January 16 charged with the murder of Travon Joseph and the attempted murder of Nelson Adderley.

Prosecutors say Cuffe was one of two gunmen who shot the men outside a home on Key West Street on December 30, 2022.

Joseph died in hospital the following day and Adderley recovered.

Cuffe was not required to enter pleas to the charges, and he was remanded to prison until April 4.

However, he can seek bail in the Supreme Court.

Cuffe was on Supreme Court bail for the June 24, 2021 fatal shooting of Gladstone Francis and the attempted murder of Savanna Francis when prosecutors say he killed Joseph and tried to kill Adderley.
