Probation for man found with pot brownies

NASSAU- A 20-year-old charged with marijuana edibles has been sentenced to probation for one year.

Police arrested Chrishon Forbes after they found two brownies in his car on August 7.

He pleaded guilty to drug possession at his arraignment.

His attorney Bjorn Ferguson asked Magistrate Samuel McKinney to give his client a second chance.

According to Mr Ferguson, Forbes was experimenting with baking with marijuana.

If Forbes is convicted of any crime while on probation, he’ll pay a $500 fine to avoid spending three months in prison.

Homeless man denied bail over broken windshield

NASSAU- A homeless man was remanded to prison to await trial for allegedly damaging a motorist’s car.

Prince Brennen, 59, who often obstructs traffic with his wheelchair, denied causing $336 in damage to the front windshield of a Honda CRV on July 17.

Additionally, prosecutors say Brennen caused harm to Van Lok on August 7.

He was further accused of failing to wear a mask in public.

Brennen denied all three charges at his arraignment before Magistrate Samuel McKinney.

Brennen was denied bail on the causing damage charge and has to make a bail application in the Supreme Court.

Magistrate McKinney set bail at $500 for the other charges

Brennen returns to court for trial on October 19.

Thief caught on camera stealing from home

NASSAU-A man who was caught on camera stealing shingles and paint from a home could face one year in prison, if he doesn’t compensate his victim.

Trevor Gray, 54, pleaded guilty to stealing 32 bundles of shingles and 12 gallons of paint from Gail Byer-Branon between July 5 and 6. He also admitted to trespassing on her property.

Ms. Byer-Branon discovered the items were missing when she checked the home she was renovating in Ferguson Subdivision.

After checking her security cameras, she recognized the thief as Gray who frequented the area.

Magistrate Samuel McKinney ordered Gray to reimburse Ms Byer-Branin $1,393, the value of the stolen items, and fined him $500.

Failure to comply will result in a one-year prison sentence.

Two officers shot while responding to domestic disturbance

NASSAU-Police shot and killed a suspect while responding to a domestic dispute this morning.

Two police officers who responded to the incident are in hospital after receiving injuries in the incident.

It all began when officers responded to call at a home at Cascarilla Street in Pinewood Gardens after the suspect had a confrontation with his mother over her morning devotion.

When the officers went inside the home, the suspect opened fire on the officers and his mother.

Constable 3637 Joey Rolle covered the mother and was shot in the back. However, he got the woman out of harm’s way.

Officers called for backup. They met the suspect barricaded inside a room.

The officers forced their way inside after the suspect refused to let them in.

The officers shot and killed the man after he fired at them.

Another officer, Corporal 3118 Jarvis Rolle, was shot in the leg.

Both officers are receiving treatment at Doctors Hospital.

NASSAU- A gunman is dead after he shot a police officer this morning.

The incident happened at Cascarilla in Pinewood Gardens around 10am.

The officer was shot while responding to a complaint. He’s in hospital and his condition is unknown.

The scene is still active.

Plans to resume jury trials, family court

NASSAU- The Supreme Court intends to resume jury trials for the first time since March, when the COVID-19 global pandemic hit the country.

Although the country is experiencing a surge in cases, the court’s website says that it intends to resume jury trials in September.

The actual start date depends on “future developments relating to the COVID-19 pandemic.”

During the pandemic, the Supreme Court continued its work by holding bail and case management hearings remotely.

However, jury trials must be held in person.

For now, all in-person Supreme Court civil cases remain suspended.

Over in the Magistrates’ Courts, there are plans to resume civil and family cases next month.

The start date depends on current conditions in the country.

In the meantime, urgent civil and family claims can be filed in the Magistrates’ Courts Civil Registry from 10:30am to 2:30pm.

These claims must be certified by the chief magistrate or the deputy chief magistrate.

Traffic cases that resumed on July 27 are once again suspended due to the lockdown. However, you can still pay traffic tickets.

Meanwhile, magistrates continue to process new cases with arraignments and deliver decisions in part-heard cases.

The accounts section remains open to receive court-ordered maintenance payments. The beneficiaries will receive the payments by direct deposit.

Court extends deadline for student in death threat case

NASSAU-A woman who sent online death threats to police officers has received more time to complete anger management classes.

Jodie Miller, 21, was supposed to conclude the classes bu August 6.

However, her lawyer Lennox Coleby said the class schedule was disrupted by the coronavirus lockdown and the passage of Hurricane Isaias.

As a result, Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt gave Miller until September 16 to complete her final classes. She also already made a court-ordered apology on her social media accounts.

Once Miller completes her classes, she’ll be eligible for a conditional discharge.

Miller pleaded guilty to threats of death in April.

The university student wished death on police officers on her Twitter and Facebook accounts on Sunday, April 5.

She made the offensive posts after viewing a viral video of two police officers arresting a man in the Kemp Road area. The police encounter angered people in the neighbourhood. They intervened as police tried to take man into custody.

As the crowd surrounded the two officers, one of them drew a gun and fired several shots.

Miller posted the video on her Facebook account and commented: “That’s only two police. They should have killed them.”

But it didn’t stop there. Miller then tweeted, “Nassau police so f*** up. I don’t know why people just don’t start killing them for nothing. ”

After viewing the video and Miller’s, WPC 3912 D’andre Cadet made a complaint to the Central Detective Unit saying that she feared for her life.

Police arrested Miller at her home. When they asked her why she wanted police dead, Miller said that’s how she felt after she saw the video.

Mr Coleby said the video brought back memories of a painful encounter that Miller had with police three years ago.

He said the business management major at the University of The Bahamas had made a “silly mistake.”

Man charged after DEU find ganja at his home

NASSAU- A man has been charged with possession with intent to supply after police allegedly found 10 pounds of marijuana at his home.

Patrick Knowles, 58, denied the charge at his arraignment on Friday.

Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes set a trial for December 1.

Officers from the Drug Enforcement Unit arrested Knowles at Hepburn Alley around 8pm on August 5.

Knowles has to apply for bail in the Supreme Court because magistrates don’t have the authority to consider bail for the offense.

Murder suspect in critical condition after shooting

NASSAU- A man on bail for murder and attempted murder survived an attempt on his life Friday morning.

Vernal Johnson is in critical but stable condition in hospital after he was shot five times.

Police said the incident happened around 7am at Graham Drive in Yellow Elder Gardens.

Johnson was in his car when a gunman opened fire on him from a Toyota Passo.

Johnson drove himself to hospital.

Johnson, of Dumping Ground Corner, is on bail for the 2018 murder of Rico Taylor and the attempted murders of Anfernee Major and Jarvis Joseph.

Prosecutors allege Johnson shot the men after an argument at a club on Hutchinson Street on February 9.

Mother failed to report abuse, prosecutors say

NASSAU-A mother accused of failing to alert authorities after her boyfriend allegedly indecently assaulted her child has been freed on bail pending trial.

Prosecutors allege that Jaydon Pierre, 28, knew about the alleged incident on July 30 — but did nothing about it.

She is accused of failing to report the abuse of the 11-year-old girl.

Meanwhile, the boyfriend Dereck Colebrooke, 31, is accused of indecently assaulting two girls, ages 11 and 13.

He’s also accused of the assault of the 13-year-old.

Colebrooke and Pierre denied the accusations against them at their arraignment.

Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes set the case for trial on November 25.

He released Pierre on $1,500 bail. The court set Colebrooke’s bail at $5,000 on the condition that he has no contact with his alleged victims.
