Men jailed after hero foils housebreaking

NASSAU- An armed have-a-go hero foiled a housebreaking when he detained two men he caught staking out a home on Oceanview Drive, West Bay Street.

Police arrested Shavez Hart and Tiko Smith for possession of housebreaking implements at daytime as a result of the civilian’s bravery.

It all began on May 18 when two men working on the property in question spotted a suspicious car when they returned from a hardware store.

A man exited the car and ran down the street.

But on closer inspection on the vehicle, the workers saw two other men crouched in the car.

As a result, one of the workers got his licensed shotgun and ordered the men out of the car and made a citizen’s arrest.

When the police arrived, they searched the suspects’ car and found pliers, bolt cutters, masks and gloves inside.

Hart and Smith pleaded guilty to possession of housebreaking implements and vagrancy at their arraignment before Assistant Chief Magistrate Subusola Swain on May 23.

Due to Hart’s extensive criminal record, the magistrate sentenced him to 18 months for having the housebreaking tools. Smith was jailed for six months on the charge.

Both men received a concurrent sentence of 14 days on the vagrancy charge.
