Man on trial after girl, 8, gets STD

NASSAU- A 32-year-old man is on trial for the alleged sexual assault of a child who contracted a sexually transmitted disease.

The man was charged with unlawful sexual intercourse in 2018 after health officials notified the police of suspected abuse of the eight-year-old girl.

The accused is the father of the alleged victim’s younger sister. His name has been withheld to protect the identity of the alleged victim.

The victim, who is now 12, claimed that she developed genital warts days after the man sexually assaulted her at their New Providence home.

The incident allegedly happened while the man was watching the girl and her half-sister while their mother was at work.

She told her mother after the warts got bigger.

As a result, her mother took her to the clinic and the police were notified.

According to the evidence, genital warts are not curable, but they can be removed.

Justice Deborah Fraser is expected to turn the case over to the jury next week.

The accused did not take the witness stand, nor did he call witnesses in his defense.

He is represented by Bjorn Ferguson. Timothy Bailey and Tamika Gibson are the prosecutors.
