Nassau, BAHAMAS- In 2015, a man was jailed for sexually abusing his stepdaughter and taking her to get an abortion when she got pregnant.
The 41-year-old was sentenced to 12 years in prison for unlawful sexual intercourse with a dependent and seven years in prison for abetment to abortion. The sentences ran concurrently.
The convict’s name has been withheld to protect the identity of his victim.
He began molesting the 12-year-old girl in 2008, soon after he wed her mother in 2007.
The sexual assaults happened when her mother worked late; when her stepfather picked her up from Junior Achievement at nights; or when school was dismissed early.
The sexual abuse came to light when the girl became pregnant at 17 in 2013.
The man tried to cover his tracks by taking the girl to a clinic for a medical abortion, but the entire fetus was not expelled.
As a result, the girl’s mother had to take her to hospital for treatment for an incomplete septic abortion.
