Man awarded $90,000 in damages for 9 days in jail

FREEPORT- A man who sued the government for his unlawful detention at the prison has been awarded $90,000 in damages.

Daleon Brown was granted $9,000 bail on a charge of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life on March 7, 2019.

Although his guarantors posted his bail on March 11, authorities did not release him from prison.

Brown’s lawsuit alleged that administrative officers at the Supreme Court were indifferent when his sureties complained that he was still in custody on March 12.

He was released on March 20, one day after his lawyer Simeon Brown informed the deputy registrar of his false imprisonment.

The government’s lawyers conceded liability in the case.

Acting Assistant Registrar Dawson Malone assessed damages of $90,000 for the extra nine days he had spent in prison.

The parties agreed on an award of $60,000 for Brown’s legal costs.
