Hustler jailed for $100 theft from tourist

NASSAU- A street hustler who breached a court order banning him from Paradise Island has been jailed for stealing $100 from an American tourist.

Mario Roker, 42, of St James Road, offered to sell cigars to the guest at the RIU Hotel on December 4.

Saralin Darasvath agreed to buy a cigar from Roker for $20–but she didn’t have anything smaller than a $100 note.

When the woman gave Roker her money, he ran off and never returned. She didn’t get her cigar either.

The woman reported the incident to a security guard at the hotel. He, in turn, notified the police.

A police officer arrested Roker near a web shop on Paradise Island.

His victim picked him out from a photo lineup.

Roker, who has a history of similar incidents, pleaded guilty stealing at his arraignment before Magistrate Kendra Kelly.

In 2017, another magistrate banned Roker from Paradise Island for five years and attached a three-month default sentence for a breach of that order.

Roker was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment for his most recent theft. However, the sentence will begin after he’s done serving the three months for going on Paradise Island.
