NASSAU- The man who police say ran over a policeman with his car at Arawak Cay was released from prison last year after his life sentence was commuted.
Prosecutors say Cyril Liston Gaitor, 56, seriously injured Constable 4384 Antonio Bethel when he hit him with his car on November 29.
Gaitor has denied charges of grievous harm, assault with a deadly instrument and resisting arrest in connection with the incident.
Gaitor’s bail was set at $5,000 and he was directed to return to court on April 11, 2023 for trial.
In 1991, Gaitor was among three gunmen who ambushed a customs officer and his escorts, a police officer and customs guard, as they took $15,440 in customs duties to a bank at the Nassau International Airport.
Gaitor and his accomplices were convicted in 1997 and sentenced to life imprisonment for attempted murder and 25 years’ imprisonment for armed robbery.
Gaitor was released from prison on August 31, 2021 after his life sentence was commuted.
Since his release, Gaitor has been accused of shop breaking and stealing. That case is still pending.
