Driver jailed for fatal hit and run

Nassau, BAHAMAS- A nail salon owner who killed a pedestrian in a hit-and-run crash has been jailed for three years and six months.

Altanease Rolle, 25, hit Sandy Rolle (no relation) on John F Kennedy Drive on February 14, 2022.

Rolle continued driving to a friend’s house, where she had a shower and stayed the night.

The following day, Rolle had her badly damaged car towed to her home.

Rolle didn’t report the accident until three days later after police released a photo taken from CCTV footage of her car.

She shouldn’t have been driving because the car was unlicensed and uninsured and she didn’t have a driver’s license.

Rolle, the owner of Nail Flirt, pleaded guilty to vehicular manslaughter, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years’ imprisonment.

Justice Gregory Hilton took Rolle’s early guilty plea into account in arriving at the sentence.

If she’d been convicted after a trial, he said she would have been jailed for five years.

Rolle also has to pay $20,000 in compensation to the estate of the deceased.
