NASSAU- A man caught trying to smuggle a kilo of cocaine into the United States has been fined $20,000.
Deejay turned drug smuggler Raymond Evans, 22, was arrested at the Lynden Pindling International Airport on May 23.
Evans pleaded guilty at his arraignment before Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes.
Evans had been enlisted by a man to take the cocaine to Boston. But authorities derailed the smuggling plan with Evans’ arrest.
He cooperated with police, telling them that the drugs had been hidden in a garbage can in an airport bathroom.
After retrieving the contraband, Evans attempted to conceal the cocaine by taping it to his back.
Police have accused Shawn Moss, of Yellow Elder Gardens, of directing Evans to where the cocaine was stashed after he had trouble locating the stash spot.
Moss has denied this and he has been freed on $7,000 bail. Moss’ trial is scheduled to begin on October 25.
As for Evans, failure to pay the fine would result in a prison term of two years.
His lawyer Kendal Wright asked for time to pay the money.
Magistrate Forbes ordered Evans to pay half of his fine to secure his release. The remaining $10,000 is due by the end of the July.
Evans is next due in court on August 3 for a status hearing.
