Bail set for Chinese men in human trafficking case

Nassau, BAHAMAS- Three Chinese men facing human trafficking charges that involved forced labour and torture have been each been granted $15,000 bail.

Prosecutors say that 30-year-old Zhao Jinbo became a victim of human trafficking after he went to work at the Bird Cay Marina Corp in The Berry Islands as an excavator operator.

From March 1, 2023 to July 19, 2023, Jinbo was allegedly forced to work overtime without compensation by his supervisors Xiang Gao, Li Qiang and Feng Gao.

The men allegedly starved and beat Jinbo and made him drink his urine after withholding his passport.

Jinbo’s relatives contacted Bahamian police and he was rescued on July 19.

Jinbo, who was in the country on a work permit, has since returned to China.

The alleged traffickers will be tagged with an ankle bracelet and are required to report to police on weekdays and keep a curfew.

They are expected to receive a voluntary bill of indictment that will send their case to the Supreme Court on October 5.
