NASSAU- An off-duty policeman fatally shot a man who allegedly struck him in the head with a baseball bat Friday night.
The incident happened in the parking lot of a plaza on East Street South opposite Cox Way around 10pm.
Authorities said the officer was at a business when he intervened in an altercation.
The man involved in the altercation left and returned armed with the bat. The officer shot the man after he allegedly hit him in the face and head with the bat, police said.
The officer was taken to hospital for his injuries.
Police said a coroner’s inquest will be held into the matter.
