NASSAU – A 73-year-old Spanish woman caught smuggling five kilos into the country was sentenced to just five months’ imprisonment today.
Cops busted Esperanza Bonet-Roig shortly after she arrived at the Lynden Pindling International Airport on March 7.
Ms Bonet-Roig travelled on a Copa Airlines flight from Panama with the drugs stashed in the false bottom of her duffle bag. The cocaine has a wholesale street value of $84,000.
After spending five months on remand at prison, Bonet-Roig admitted to importing cocaine into the country with the intent to supply.
According to defence lawyer Jairam Mangra, Ms Bonet-Roig has multiple medical issues.
Deputy Chief Magistrate Andrew Forbes sentenced Ms Bonet-Roig to time-served.
And he ordered her handed over to immigration officials for deportation.
